front BRAKES NOT THAT GOOD

Recommended Posts

Hi mates

Just took the TR4 out for a test run, front brakes not that good, thought maybe the pads too hard, took them out , they had a bit bit of "brass" in them I think, is there any recomended  for disc's w/ no booster?--

thanks Barry

Which TR 4 calipers  do you have?  How are the pads retained in the caliper?

If it is the later pin retained type there are a wealth of pad materials available as Ford used that caliper in Europe on Escort models.  as did other manufacturers at the time. Like Lotus and Austin/Morris /Rover.

Girling reference for the pad shape with 1/4” pins is GDB525.  or with3/16” pins GDB568 (drill them out to suit). The earlier type of caliper pads are retained by bolted plates and are ref GDB500.

I think there is a rice burner that uses the same pin retained pad as the TR but I do not know what vehicle.

Cheers

Barry:

I had a similar problem last year when I first acquired my TR4A. I had installed Moss's  "Classic Gold" pads and I thought the pedal felt very "wooden". After flushing the complete system (fluid was very old) and properly adjusting the rear brakes the brakes are great.

hi

eBay for Mintex pads - TR4 to TR6 type for 16 pb callipers are less than £60 delivered. Cheaper compounds very much cheaper. There is a particularly good seller on there I buy from regularly. They do squeal more sometimes owing to the binding agent used in the pad material but keeping them clean helps this greatly.

You ought to check why your pads are glazing up - are they overheating because of the shield ? Or fluid getting very hot in the callipers, but not quite hot enough to boil and cause failure. Using a good high temp tolerant fluid like Castrol SRF tends to have benefit in my experience.

Regards

Tony

Lots of Ebay sources for the mintex 1144 - Search on MGB 633 1144.

Most come with the smaller diameter holes but a couple of minutes with a drill and you have 1/2inch holes.

The standard calipers in good condition with mintex 1144s is absolutely fine for road use. Putting 4 pot calipers on a standard disc is pointless.

The reason to go for a 4 pot conversion is to fit vented discs with the capacity to shed heat better but that generally isn't a real issue for road use.  It might be for a track car where you have repeated high speed braking to be done, However they might not be permitted for race use!

I have very good results with Ferodo DS Performance pads (FER 167 design) in  my 4A. I actually prefer their bite to that of 1144s and a bonus is that, at least in my car, the Ferodos NEVER squeal!

When my TR4 was a road car I've used Green Stuff for years and later as race car Yellow Stuff.

But then came a point - and I don't know why - the brake pads failed. Especially on the IMSA TR8 car I've lost twice the compounds from the steel back plate (quite hairy at the end of a long straight at 160mph).

I moved over to Pagid with both cars and have a lot better brake feel and constancy.

For FIA race use we have to use standard brakes.

When our standard set up is working at it's peak it is spot on.  I have locked up the fronts under heavy braking at 80mph plus when needed and seen others perform well under race conditions.

many use Mintex , i use Hawk blue

I see Ferodo list part number FDB167M for various classic Ford pads - these look identical to TR ones so are they the same as FER 167 - they look like they will fit straight in - as ford parts, there are some really good value sets around so maybe a cost effective source?

The PO installed Toyota 4 piston calipers on my TR4a. My first reaction when I bought the car was to swap them out for stock ones. However, brake performance was good, and getting pads is very easy (especially here in the US), so I kept them.

Yes that's right Nigel the FER167 backplate holes are for metric pins. I enlarged the holes with a rat tail file to take the 1/4" Imperial pins on my car.
