Spherical turning attachment Bob. You rotate it with the handle seen sticking out to the right, so the cutter describes an arc. Ā Moving the toolpost along the slot changes the radius being cut.Ā

I think the clue on what is being made, is in another thread on here from a couple of days back.....

Yesterday I watched a YouTube video about!

Using it on the other side ofĀ the center you can cut a concaveĀ surface,

and using this sidewards the bar you get a nice surface for a ā€žrilledā€œ handle for the handbrake lever!

About six inches of round bar (or tube, cant see the end) in a lathe.

This is like being shown a tree and asked what I'm going to make from it.Ā  Ā  Could be furniture, could be firewood.

.............I like that tool - must get oneĀ :)

I bought one some time back - Ā it is designed to fit a Myford lathe but works OK on my ancient Drummond when packed-up to the correctĀ centre height.

Yes it is a RDG Tool. Ā Not wonderful but effective. Ā Biggest problem is getting the tool near to the standard chuck without impingement.Ā Ā  I get round this with a smaller diameterĀ chuck. Setting diameters is not incredibly accurate. Ā  There are videos on it

A nicer version you could make yourself from a kit.

Here we goā€¦.
A gear knob in stainless steel following the shape and sizeĀ of an original rubber one. Ā Knob is going to a forum member.

Started with a 100 mm of 35 mm stainless bar. Ā
Turned taper on one end comparing it with an originalĀ

Drilled 10.3 mm for tapping

Tapped 7/16x32 ME

Parted off length as deep as dared.

Fitted to threaded mandrel and spherical turnĀ end and blend as required.

Clean up tooling marks with 280 wet and dry using suds as lubricant.

Polish on the mop to remove scratches and get a lustre.

A full afternoonā€™s work done over 3 days. Ā

The most time consuming part was setting up the spherical turning tool to the required radius and then trialling it on some aluminium bar.
Tapping took a while as it is done by hand turning the lathe spindle to get 1.25 ā€œ depth. Ā 32 tpi x 1.25 = 40 full turns in 1/3 turn moves backing off every cut to clear the chips, plus dripping cutting lube in. Ā Ā Last thing I wanted was a broken tap!

Extraordinary work Peter, and my sincerest thanks!

Some of you many have seen my recent thread (linked below) enquiring about gearstick thread sizes, and the availability of a Moss Motors aluminium gear knob. In response, Peter W generously stepped forward and, going far and beyond the call of duty, offered to fabricate the glorious custom billet steel gear knob you see above.Ā

Once again, exceptional thanks Peter! It isĀ far more than I couldā€™ve hoped for. What would otherwise have been aĀ Moss Motors stocking filler, now upgraded to a hand-crafted original shifter, andĀ pride of place under the tree!

Hugely appreciated.

Cheers, Deggers

I don't know if they are the wrong size, but one of the well known TR2-3-4 hubcap badges would looks well on there.

On the lathe, you could cut a recess on the topĀ of the knob for the round badge and epoxy it in.
