Moss vs rimmer bros

Recommended Posts

Any view on the difference between these 2 suppliers? Just got a TR6 and looking to buy a new starter motor, moss much cheaper but does Rimmer bros have a reputation for higher quality? Seems to be a common that Rimmer is more expensive on the items I have looked at.

Hi Roger,

they sell each others parts.  Moss tends to have a decent returns policy. If you don't want it they will usually take it back (with the receipt)

Also if you spend £500 at Moss through the year- easily done - they will pay you following years TRR club subs.

And then .......  there is the TRShop in West London - their prices tend to be lower.

Are you in the UK?

I try not to use Rimmers if at all possible too many I’ll fitting poor quality parts, sure they deliver quickly but there customer service is poor.

Moss seem to be better for some things and not others. TR shop I’ve found good to deal with and the quality generally good at a fair price.

That said now where ever possible I tend to look for old new stock parts, recondition what I have or buy used parts and recondition them as they are generally better than the current offerings who ever supplied them.

I've had quality problems with both. The new parts may look like the Triumph originals but lack subtleties that were known to the UK manufacturer's engineers  from years of experience. Often you don't find this out until you put your new part into service. Experience has convinced me to use repaired original/NOS parts whenever possible.

I dare say if you traced the origin of most new TR parts on the market they would come from the same Asian factories- not that I have anything against Asians, it's just that the  companies  that  arrange for them to supply parts  don't have the background of the blokes at Canley.

I tend to buy most of my parts from TR Shop and occasionally from Moss as well. I would never buy from Rimmers unless it was the very last option

That's a bit like me Stuart? But I also have had my run in's with Moss as well! especially over bearing quality? I would not use them for bearings? I use a local bearing distributor who has all the cross reference charts going back into the 1950's and only supplies European or Jap made bearings! He will not supply  made in China bearings? I found out from him that BL used a number of specials only made by SKF? I wonder what you would get from Moss or Rimmers in the way of Quality??

I have had two rubbish orders from Rimmers this year,  and their final response after emails and photographs "We have sold a great number of these and never had a complaint. This conversation is now closed. "

I bought my uprated starter from Cambridge Motorsport. A quality product that fitted well and lasted over 20 years. I bought the replacement from them as well.

Rimmers just do not care. Do not cause yourself a lot of anguish.

Good luck Richard & B

I tend to use David Manners these days, the parts seem pretty much the same as Moss but you get a discount as a TRR member and I've found their customer service is excellent.

Hello DRD

how do you get the TRR discount?

I was just about to order some things but they can wait if I can save a few pennies!

"We have sold a great number of these and never had a complaint'  I have heard Moss use this saying many times over the last 40 years!! But I have not heard them use this saying after they were hit by a Consequential Warranty Claim which ran into a few thousand ££££. That was the end of their re-grind cam shafts! They upset the wrong person?

Just phone them up and tell them your membership number. Once its added to your account then you always get the discount.

Also I think P&P is free at the moment.

I've had some rubbish off the TR Shop as well - although they did give me a refund for the parts (but not all the wasted time spent trying to fit them mind!).

Don’t know how feasible it would be but why don’t we do a spread sheet with all the part numbers/description for each TR mark and have the suppliers at the top. We could then populate with peoples score for each part. The more ticks in a box the better the part and where to buy from.

This would achieve two things ;

1 Members would get the better parts

2 The suppliers would have to up there game when ultimately they are left with inferior parts they can’t give away. Result they have to offer better quality albeit at a greater cost but then competition will keep the increase reasonable.

It would take a long time to work but maybe    the register could resource it to benefit everyone including the suppliers.

The Register likes advertising revenues Andy, that overrides other considerations I suspect.

I have an account with Rimmer and they treat trade customers well (better than general public from what I've seen). If I wasn't using Rimmer for discount I would always use TRGB, friendly, knowledgeable and quick delivery. Also have parts cars there if you need a random unavailable used part.

Speaks volumes for there customer service and business ethos. Another reason to put them bottom of the list of preferred suppliers in my book. Obviously too big to care.

I've been using Moss London and their previous incarnation 'Cox & Buckles' since 1983 and have rarely gone elsewhere for reproduction stuff; although it was still possible to get OEM/NOS from C&B back then - as has been said, Moss' returns policy is excellent and have found their customer care and helpfulness better than most.

Cheers, Andrew

I'm still waiting for the "B" post I ordered over forty years ago and, while I'm thinking about it, a refund on the PR valve that failed just after I had landed in France!

Not that I'm overly impressed with Rimmers either, especially when they have warning posters to employees regarding nicking stuff that the customer can or could see. Trblitz would be my first port of call for those of us in the northwest.

Hi Andy,

That is why the moderators asked for and got the forum: https://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums/index.php?/forum/56-best-tr-parts-sources/ A number of people use it but sadly many others scatter their recommendations all over the place. I encourage everybody to use it and it will become an even more valuable resource, particularly to newer members.

Hi Ian, the club encourages all of the TR suppliers to provide good quality parts, whether they advertise in the magazine or not. Mike Jennings, our technical editor, is trying to get the major TR Specialists, who are the biggest users of TR parts, to share information on parts quality issues. By doing this we can identify where action needs to be taken.

Mick
