Question: can I use stainless steel 3/8 unf nuts instead of the standard steel ones, on lots of other classic cars I've seen copper bolts- to hold the exhaust manifold onto block. What are your thoughts please?

Michael

They arent copper but copper coated steel, Brass nuts are a good choice.

Brass or Bronze?    They differ in the relative amounts of tin or zinc in the alloy, and the addition of silicon to the bronze, which is more corrosion resistant and will not bind to the steel studs.   Widely used for marine purposes, find bronze nuts on eBay, just don't search for "exhaust" nuts or you'll be sold 'Jaguar' ones at £3.60 each!

Brass nuts for my manifolds, with copper grease on assembly. Worth considering stainless studs rather than plated steel.

Great, ordered brass nuts. Now Nigel I can't find stainless 5/16 X 1 1/4 UNF studs, plenty that are UNF UNC but can't find UNF UNF if that makes sense?

Odd... Most of the listings for SS manifold studs on eBay have expired, like this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264748287334

Perhaps a message to the eBay seller may find a set.

The heat of the exhaust is the challenge.

Best to open again are bronze or brass nuts on steel studs, bronze is more solid (torque),

second choice are copper coated nuts, third choice is steel on steel with copper grease,

I recommend to avoid all other combinations.

Pure copper is too soft for nuts or bolts.

Good suplier for imperial bolts and nuts is "Screw Corner" ..... at Germany!

Best you order via their eBay shop.

For brass and bronze nuts I would contact "The green plug" at the UK.

Or you order by the standard suppliers.
