Bob,

I can do you a drawing of a dipstick if you want or, if I can get to it, you can borrow one from my spare gearbox to copy.

I recall the challenge was making the felt bush that forms the seal.  Probably better to use a couple of O rings instead.

Hi Ian. Could you measure the diameter of the hole in the box (or the diameter of the felt seal).

If I make one I will probably cut an 'O' ring groove in the top  section to provide the seal.

My tunnel already has the access hole & rubber bung as mine is an early TR3.

The hole is 20.4mm dia. with a small chamfer (approx. 2mm) on the lead into it.  The felt is about 20.5mm dia. although it is difficult to get a precise measurement because the felt crushes.  The dipstick is definitely not a tight fit in the hole.

Todays tasks were:

To make a new anti-rattle plunger to go in the bottom of the gear lever. The old one vanished when I removed the lever, & can I find it - no.  I made some of different lengths for a fellow TVG member a while ago, I sacrificed a pozidrive screwdriver to obtain some ¼" hard steel rod, and luckily I knew where to find the piece I had left over.

Next was to setup the two halves of the rear crank oil seal ready for modifying to take the Christian Marx lip seal.

Locking halves together over the alignment tool (thanks Roger), mounting on lathe, centering it up.

Will start machining tomorrow.

I made my anti rattle plunger from a short length of silver steel, domed end using lathe and file, cut to length & subsequently flame hardened.  - 1/4" diameter is the size I used and 5/16" -  3/8" long.

I can second Peter's comment about a dipstick, I have one and it makes oil checkups and topping up a whole lot easier.  Even more so if you cut a hole in your tunnel over the top of it and add a rubber bung.  If you need a photo, I can provide one.

Hi Ian, having drilled a 20mm hole in the gearbox, & made my dipstick, one last request, can you measure the distance from under the cap (ie top surface of gearbox hole) to the min, & the max lines, I can them stamp them into my version.  Ta.

Top job Bob, (as usual).

The dimensions from the underside of the top plate to the two level marks are 7.125” and 7.5”.

Rgds Ian

PS There’s a bit of parallax happening with the photo which is why both the above dimensions appear slightly more.

Interestingly, I made the marks on me dipstick as measured above, & then I thought I would compare the level indicated with what you would get at the level filling / setting hole in the side.

With everything leveled up, I determined that the dipstick marks were ¼" too low for this box.

seems the later 4 synchro boxed were slightly different in this area. Anyway, it was easy to add another mark ¼" further up, & cut the rod at the previous lower mark point.

Gearbox finally back together, struck it lucky with the overdrive, it went all the way on 1st time !

Tested using a drill on I/P shaft & O/D still works which was a relief.
