TR6 Core plug renew

Recommended Posts

Hopefully everyone keeping well.

Recently during my TR6 PI car being for sale in a non TR specialist garage, they advised the core plug was leaking behind the distributor and MU.

Being a distance away I asked them to do the job,ie take distributor and MU to access core plug, replace and re time, they also did an oil change.

I have received an invoice for 13 hours labour, nearly fell off my chair.

Over last few years dizzy and MU have been serviced so no seized parts to contend with.

Anyone got any thought's or comments.

Best Regards

Did they have to take the engine out to get at it ? I've noticed that garages that sell cars on commission try and find a lot of work to book against the owners final sales settlement. I guess it makes the car easier to sell and increases the garage's margin on the transaction.

The triumph repair times schedule suggests that the ‘core plug, right side of engine’ should take 1.85 hours to replace.  So 13 hours seems excessive.

interestingly, 12 hours should be long enough to remove And replace the crankshaft According to the repair times schedule which gives your chaps an hour spare for a cup of tea.

Your local trading standards team may be able to advise you.

have a discussion with the garage to see if they ran into any particular issues whilst doing the job.

just because they are unfamiliar with a task or car model doesn’t mean they learn on your billable time.

Malcolm,

It's fair to say that that particular core plug is the worst of the 6 of that type around the block. There are 4 on the right side under the inlet and exhaust manifolds and 2 on the left side, 1 between the alternator mount and coil and one behind the Distributor/Metering Unit.

I changed the one behind the alternator on my TR6 in August in about and hour and a half including replacing the alternator and coil.

The one behind the distributor is altogether more difficult to access with the engine in the car. Also, the hole behind the core plug in the cast iron block is much smaller than the others. This makes it is more difficult to drill and prize out. Nonetheless, it is possible to do it and that day and a half labour charge is ridiculously long. The plug itself is around £2.25. Good luck with contesting your bill.
