Regards, Richard Thank you. that’s my thinking as well.
RobH
Hamish - this is what you should have: The splined washer sits at the rear of the pinion for the internal shock spring to act against. It stops the pinion assembly from going past the end of the splined portion on the shaft. Edited October 11, 2020 by RobH

Would you share a link as to where you found it. thanks
RobH
I just did a web-search for WOSP pinion assembly Hamish. The site is here: https://www.amp-starters.co.uk/WOSP-LMPK1029---10/29mm-Pinion__p-35746.aspx but it might not be the right one for your starter.

RogerH
Hi Hamish, this is my SM cog it is held against the motor body when not spinning by a strongish spring. Roger
Hamish
Hi Roger thanks I hope you didn’t remove it to check and take the pic!!!? i think i spy a circlip at the back of the cog too. this is my down fall I think. lots to go on now, but hopefully powerlite will help me out. I’ll report back H Edited October 11, 2020 by Hamish Sp
Hamish
Hi folks A quick update. have exchanged a couple of emails with the starter motor company. it has been a wonderful experience. Seriously. Not hint of awkwardness they know the unit is 4 years old. Just a confirmation of starter model and pinion size and they are sending me the parts needed today. for free. After I explained I was happy to do the spanner work rather than send the whole unit back. in my book some things will go wrong what really counts is how this is dealt with. so far my experience is very good. When the parts arrive I’ll let you know who. ( I’m superstitious so don’t want to risk anything just yet) H
RogerH
Hi Hamish. that sounds like good service. I hope you can fit it OK. Roger
BlueTR3A-5EKT
When you flick the round spring snap ring off - and come to replace it - do it inside a plastic bag as it will fly off round the garage in search of the darkest and most obscure place to hide in. Lebro
You will find a valve spring compressor very handy when you come to fit the shielded circlip on the end. Bob.
Hamish
This method has been suggested.
BlueTR3A-5EKT
Excellent to have a video of the job you are about to do. Peter W
Hamish
It’s sad really how excited I was this morning when the postman arrived. a simple padded envelope containing some little metal parts. (Thank you powerlite/Eurolec great customer service.) but it means I can get in the garage to fix the starter and hopefully remember how everything else goes back together. Hamish
Well it’s all back together and it starts the car. Despite the video I struggled to fit the retaining clip in the collar it was very tight. so made a tool/bracket that kept the pinion back whilst I fitted the collar and clip. thanks to powerlite for the parts for a 4 year old starter. Good customer service in my book. seemed to take ages to fit the exhaust manifold and carbs. but I took the opportunity to fit a blank to where the block Tap fits. That tap was very slack and easily moved as I found out doing the starter blucol pouring out at the slightest touch.
Lebro
Well done, but that's why I suggested a valve spring compressor to hold back the gear. A friend of mine had to do the same job on a Wosp starter, & the VSC worked a treat. Bob.

RogerH
Hi Hamish, if ever you want a valve compressor then send me your address and I pop one in the post. I seem to have collected three over the years. Roger

I get upset now when a day goes by without a delivery of some sort related to the car. What is sad is that excellent customer service isn't the norm.
PhilipB
Hi Hamish Did you get any warning signs of imminent failure? Same type of SM which feels as if it's starting to stick, particularly if the engine didn't fire first time. However, also exploring the possibility that the battery is on the way out. Cheers Phil
Hamish
Hi Phil no warning just spinning and no engagement one day. it always turned on the key but sometimes doesn’t spin up just using the button on the back of the solenoid. i have had low battery efficiency but that just sounded sluggish.
