Rear Light Seals

Recommended Posts

Hi Richard,

mine came from Moss and were ok. I had some old new items, 5 years old, they were hard. Quality of the sheet material was low, apparently.

There were two types of seal provided originally I recall from selling lamp assemblies in the 70s & 80s.  The gasket could have been a long soft foam about 3/8” thick that you had to carefully bend to fit  The other was a two piece arrangement that was glued at the corner joint and was a firmer but thinner black foam.  The first type were not handed the glued one is handed.  The glued and shaped one was a lot easier to fit

What design is sold by the specialists today?

Cheers

Hi Peter,

I had the thick one supplied in 2 pieces, it fitted well (with care) and I glued it using only a dab at the top, hoping it could drain a bit via the small bottom slit that was left.
Do not tighten the nuts in one go, but in 2 or 3 steps during a day (or two).

What is the meaning of "handed"?

It means the shapes are different depending on whether it is for the right-hand or left-hand side.

Sensible option from a sales point of view supplying one pack of two foams, that can be assembled for either LH or RH fitment

Hi Richard71

All I can say I fitted a new set of thick foam seals from either Rimmerbros or Moss and they leaked.

I had only just purchased my TR6 and it was out in all weathers.

I only found out when the new boot trim kit I had fitted got ruined, more from the petrol filler cap leaking water than just the rear light fittings.

When I fitted my first set of foam seals I put a thin bead of Arbomast Autograde sealant for windscreens between the foam seals and light fitting, but they must have still leaked.

When I replaced my boot trim kit for a second time I got a replacement set of foam seals free of charge, and this time I put a thick bead of sealant between both the light fitting and body.

I applied quiet a lot of pressure to the light fitting when in place to squeeze out the sealant to make a good seal, and kept doing up the nuts but with fingers only, it could be very easy to shear off the studs.

When I was happy I had seated the light fittings as well as possible, I put a little extra pressure on the nuts with a small spanner.

I still don't claim they are 100% leak free, but a good 95%.

The sealant is easy to clean off luckily.

If anyone thinks this is over the top, all I can say I could see the foam seals leaking but only with the boot trim kit removed.

I think with the light fitting leaking it would go unnoticed and start the body to rot in this area.

I have now cured all my TR6 leaks, like most TR’s it now lives in a garage, so owners may not know if they leak or not.
