Richardtr3a
I have too much play on the axle . What is correct for the 3A differential. It has not been adjusted for over 40 years. I am interested in hardy Engineering in Leatherhead, who claim to be experienced in this work. Is there any member in that area who knows the company and can give me some advice.? Thanks Richard & B. brydon
Hi Richard. The guys who built your engine (all those years ago) rebuilt my TR3 Girling axle last year, fantastic job, they fitted new bearings, Crown wheel and Pinion the diff is now silent and the excessive previous play not detectable. I drove over 3500 miles within the first month of use including last years Triumph Liege, Brescia Liege event. Kind regards Andrew
Ian Vincent
Richard, I'm sure Hardy Engineering are an excellent company but if I were in your situation, I would take it to Pete Cox who is based near Daventry. He will strip and re-assesmble your rear axle for a very reasonable price and you will know it has been done by an expert and will be right. The hard part is removing and replacing the axle, a two hour drive to Daventry is a breeze compared to lifting a heavy lump of iron back into place - you only want to do that part once. If you want Pete's contact details send me a PM. Rgds Ian
Lebro
Hardy Engineering are just round the corner from me. They re-built my overdrive, a friend's TR 3 synchro box with overdrive, & several other items I know about. They specialise in Big Healys, but are also very familiar with TRs. I would recommend them. Kevo_6
I had my diff rebuilt with new CWP etc by Hardy Engineering a few years ago and I also would recommend them. A happy customer.
Richardtr3a
When I turn the rear brake drum by hand, there is 1/2" free play, measured on the edge of the 10" drum . What is the wear causing this movement ? Can it be repaired or is it a full overhaul? There does not seem to be any unusual noise but there is a minor vibration at 60mph. I had a new propshaft last year when the old one was written off by the balancing company. Can the axle be adjusted ,or rebuilt, while on the car. I would rather drive some distance and stay in a B&B if I could book a workshop and leave the car with them for 24 hours. It would be much easier than driving the Passat with the axle in the back or sending with a carrier, which I am not confident is safe. Thanks Richard & B.
Ian Vincent
Having rebuilt my axle, I would say it was impossible to do it in situ but there may be smarter people out there who have done it. I wouldn’t even try. Rgds Ian
harrytr5
Richard, You could try Southern Axles in Watford. He has just done my TR4 axle all though will not be tested till next year when hopefully back on the road. I left a TR5 there and he rebuilt the rear axle very quickly and drove out a couple of days later fixed. Not sure this is the norm though, maybe I was lucky. Richardtr3a
Thanks very much for the suggestions. Is the rotational free play possible to adjust out without taking the axle of the car ?? Thanks Richard & B.
Ian Vincent
Richard, If you have a TR Technicalities CD there is a section on there about rebuilding/adjusting a CW&P. If it is only a case of adjusting the backlash on the crown wheel then I suppose it would be feasible with the car up on a ramp but you would have to remove the wheels and the half shafts to get the CW out access would not be brilliant.
