Injector Circlip Removal

Recommended Posts

Morning all.

A very simple question.

Is there a technique to removing the circlip on the end of the injector ? Can the circlip be reused ? If not, where can I buy them from ?

Thanks all.

Mark.

Yes Mark, discovered this a few weeks ago, and dismantled two injectors to replace the forward O ring which had gone flat and was rattling and dribbling. As long as you are careful it can be prised out of the groove, but it will "flyaway" so best to do it inside a transparent bag, Once the circlip has been removed the inside valve assembly can be removed from the rear end, the old o ring can be removed and replaced with a new one using a little oil. As long as you don`t adjust the nut on the valve assembly they seem to retain their spray pattern. Reassembly is the opposite of dismantle, but I found it a bit more difficult to replace the circlip

The  O rings are available as spares form a number of suppliers but make sure they are the correct grade of Viton, others will confirm which grade is suitable but I believe Viton B 75 Shore Hardness is correct. I bought 6 from KMI Injection Ltd, approx £5.

Sorry but I don`t know or not seen spare circlips for sale.

Give it a try.

Regards, Colin.

Sorry forgot to mention. Use a small flat blade screwdriver, find the two ends of the circlip in the groove and then gently lever up on end whilst sliding the screwdriver around the groove.

Also to correct a mistake. I brought my internal replacement O rings from Chris Witor.

Thanks for that Colin,

The injector o rings should be ok as they have just been reconditioned by Neil Ferguson. The problem is (I think) that the banjo o rings on 2 and 5 cylinders are breaking up and clogging those two injectors. Will order replacements from Rimmers.

Thanks for your time, much appreciated.

Regards.

Mark.

Talking about clogged injectors,  yesterday I had a post lockdown run in my Six of 276 mile to Brecon and back to see my boy and his children  On the way home slowing from 70mph I noticed a cough and backfire.  Pulled over, left the engine running and felt the injector hoses for the Lucas pulse of life.  #2 was not playing.  Pulled the injector out of the manifold and then tried tapping injector with a spanner while holding it vertically which is what I have done previously to bleed it.  No joy, so then still with the engine running I exercised the needle at the end of the injector with a pair of pliers.  Nothing at first but then a few spurts of petrol.  Tapped the injector again and a lovely cone of fuel was spaying forth.  Back in the manifold, secured the plate and 120 mile home without further hiccup. Incidentally,  Banjo O rings on 2 and 5 were new about two months ago.

I've purchased a new circlip from ebay I think, was some time ago, measure one you have and try to find that size.

Thanks for the replies.

Turns out it is number 2 fuel line that is blocked, no fuel coming through at all. Will take off the metering unit, replace the banjo o rings and blow out the fuel line.

Take care where you order injection spares. Some of the big suppliers, can't say which, seemed to be offering a metric near equivalent for the banjo bolt seals in the past. These incorrectly sized seals were probably the source of many slivers of rubber in injectors. This information was from a respected injection specialist.

I don't know if this situation has been rectified, but I would order any spares from a recognised Lucas PI specialist.
