Grab handle dash board TR2

Hi All,

I have received teh grab handle for the dash board ad have been impressed by the Quality of this reproduction part. However, I have been disapointed when I have tried to install it. If I woudl attache it where it is supposed to go, it will interfere with the top of the glove box flap which cannot be opened any more. Whats wrong ?

Reference pictures and any Input welcome.

It'a bit difficult to tell from your photograph (because of the shadow) but it looks as if the return from the dash pad is too close to the top of the glove box opening. I do not have a decent photo (others will) but there should be a small area of dashboard above the opening about the depth of the two ends go the grab handle. Some photos from others will help.

Alternatively, the hinge looks quite thick and the gap at the bottom of the flap looks little large (photos can be deceptive though). A thinner hinge might help to drop the flap sufficiently to open without fouling on the grab handle.

By how much is it interfering?

Thanks all for pics and reply. Although I cannot see an obvious mismach, I have to accept the facts

I may rework the one side of the mounting surface of the handle and make it thinner until it fits...

The part should be painted black anyway, so damaging the Chrome does not hurt.....

Do you have a lot of padding on the dash rail as it does look a lot thicker than normal, this wouldnt help with positioning

I had exactly the same problem recently (but on a 3A). The original dash was covered in vinyl and there were no clearance issues but with the glove box lid and capping rail now being clad in a thickish leather, the capping is very close to the glovebox lid as there are several thicknesses of leather involved that have resulted in the glovebox lid moving up towards the capping. There was a 3-4 mm interference. I “solved” this by dismantling the glovebox lid, unpicking  the leather and slightly re-profiling both the plywood and the aluminium backing plate. I also had to reduce the thickness of the leather where the grab rail fixings are and machine the mating surface of the grab rail.

Is there any way of recreating the thin black plastic coating used on the grab handle for the 2?   Paint looks fine but a little different feel.

Handle is a different cross section too.

The one that Specialist Car provide the market with was from the original Fray tools for TR 3A

Yes, slimmer, I got hold of an original for my first TR, OGB 800.

I used a rubber paint on my long door grab handle. It had small bits of the original rubber on it which I tried to match.

It isn't as good as the original, still too thin despite many coats. I don't know of anywhere here I can get it rubber coated.

I tried a tool dip product and it was horrible.  Powder coating is an interesting thought.

I think your problem might simply be that the cockpit capping is not pushed right up to the bulkhead metalwork. If you look at David`s photo above you can see where the capping has "pulled up" tighter when the handle mounting screws are done up.

After putting the handle project aside for a while, I want to give it another try. Still wondering about correct position. Attached  pics show it centered to the glove box. The pics provided above seem to have it moved to the inside ? .... What is correct?

Your dash capping doesn't appear to be over padded but does look like it needs to be compressed more on the bottom side to give the glove box more clearance.

Here is the handle on TS3732O. The car is 3 owner and known history so the handle is in the original position and is the original thin one for early cars, except that I used a rubberised paint to try and match the original. Why one photo is upside down I don't know. They both appear right side up when I open them.

My other TR2, TS5038O has the handle the same position.

I would ignore that drawing, a lot of artistic licence in it. The holes in the cockpit coaming and upholstery capping dictate the position.

looking at fitting a grab handle. Quick question, does ot just screw directly into the upper dash, or does it need spire u nuts? If it does, how do you get the nuts into position inside?

Thanks, yes spotted the moss page, hence my question, but excuse my ignorance, where do the U bolts go? Between the handle and the leather, or do I need to get inside the dash somehow?

Think you will need to take out the glovebox for access.

As the car is pre 60000 the grab handle is attached by countersunk screws into the wood, post 60000 needed self tappers/spire nuts as the various wood parts were deleted.  The Moss catalogue section does need careful reading.
