Door window channel replacement

Recommended Posts

Having just acquired a '71 TR6 and joined the Register I need to replace the vertical door window channels .  The Haynes manual recommends releasing the glass from its lifting mechanism but mine appear to be riveted not bolted to the horizontal channel at the bottom of the glass.

Does anyone have a recommended process and can the vertical guides be removed with the glass / mechanism in place?

you can jiggle the guides in and out with the window in place. loosen off the regulator bolts as required. you buy the guide in lengths and have to cut it and remove the old mounting brackets and fit to the new guide length with pop rivets.

You can just use the furry side of sticky velcro. Just wind the window up and feed it into the metal channel. Then wind the window down and it will force it in more. Worked for me!

Too easy a job to bother with bodging in my opinion. I did a set a week or 2 back on a current restoration. Pics show the old guide and brackets. And the new guide which you need to attach the old brackets to.

An hour or so per side, the guide is cheap. No specialist tools.

Depends entirely on the situation! Not quite so easy on a complete running car.

My 'bodge' avoided taking all the door to pieces and quickly cured an annoying rattle on an otherwise excellent car in less than 30mins.

This is a very helpful guide to curing rattles on the internal door bits - http://tr6.danielsonfamily.org/WindowChannel.htm

I went the velcro way too. It works perfect. I had supplied new guides they were different from the originals, also dimension wise.

I will send them back to the supplier.

There are 2 upper and 1 lower bolt each channel. The bar that staps the 2 channels together needs removing. Wind window up and should be able to jiggle them out. Loosen regulator if necessary.
