I have a new  HP laptop. While I am getting used to to the new touchpad I am having a problem with buying things. I get as far as the confirmation that I have an item in the basket. I then go to checkout and it returns a message that there are no items in your basket.  This has happened on  five different purchases. This morning I tried to buy the same item ,but from my iPhone, and it continued normally up to the last instruction, which I will complete tomorrow after some more homework on car issues.

I have just received an email which is reminding me that I did not checkout and a suggestion that I should continue.

Is there an IT specialist who can offer any advice?

Thanks Richard & B.

I have just tried the HP support and twice received the message that it is not available, which can not be correct. If this goes on I will have to contact my 13 year old grandson.

Not sure what's going on with your shopping baskets Richard, I assume that's on a particular shopping site - eg Amazon - not generally? It sounds as though the website isn't holding onto the recognition of your machine, all the way through the process, and is therefore 'forgetting' your previous actions. I don't suppose you've done anything to the settings (eg cookies) at all?

It could also be something going on between the browser on your laptop and the website in question. I don't know what browser new laptops are supplied with now, but I assume its the latest version of the Microsoft Edge browser, which is still fairly new so there may be bugs. Like a lot of people I use a different browser - Google Chrome. If you can, it might be worth installing Chrome and trying that with the shopping site in question. It might solve things.

Incidentally if you're not enjoying the touchpad, a wireless mouse (the type with a tiny dongle that plugs into a USB port on the laptop, and can stay there permanently) makes using a laptop much more pleasant when you're sitting at a desk, in my experience anyway as I have never liked touchpads. Sorry if that's obvious but I just wondered if you were switching to a laptop for the first time.

Best of luck,

Nigel

The advice to try an alternate browser is sensible - personally I use Firefox as my primary alternate browser, Chrome is my 3rd choice.

Depending just how new your replacement device is, it may not have completed all of the patch updates yet - there will be a few for MS Edge.

Thanks for the help. The laptop is only three weeks old and I am on a learning curve. Any other advice welcome.                      Richard &  B

Richard

I run an 18month old hp laptop and there have been quite a few updates to Windows 10 and most recently edge which has a new icon that looks more like a wave curl .

Suggest you go into settings and look for updates and install any pending ones.

Hope this helps

Brian

The shopping- basket thing sounds like it may be a problem with 'cookies'.  The site you are buying from usually sets cookies on your machine to identify you during the session and it may be your browser settings are interfering with that, so that when you move to the checkout page the site can't see who you are.

I've never used Edge (which is based on the Google Chromium engine) so I can't be specific but there should be some sort of preferences menu where you can look at and adjust cookie settings.

It's certainly worth trying a different browser as others have suggested.

Stongly recommend FIREFOX.

And DUCKDUCKGO as search engine. Both good in terms of committed not to track you nor to sell your info. Both also safe and tried and tested.
