Richardtr3a Posted June 17, 2020 Report Share Posted June 17, 2020 My exhaust is leaking . I had this one made by Mike the Pipe and it has lasted very well. This is the middle one on my 3A. The joint to the downpipe was leaving a deposit and once I was under the car I could see a number of smaller leaks at each end of the middle box. Last time I replaced this the company used the wrong size pipe and it has never been right since. I have had adapters made and welding repairs but it now seems to be time for a new box. My old Moss catalogue gives HRSU331 front silencer £99.95. Is it worth going for stainless steel. I am looking for one that will fit first time without need for welding, bending or adjustment by an exhaust specialist. Can anyone advise where to buy so that I can fit it myself out on the drive in a couple of hours at home.? Thanks Richard & B Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Tony_C Posted June 17, 2020 Report Share Posted June 17, 2020 Hi Richard, Sure others will be along with differing opinions but, first in for what it’s worth, I’ve never bought into the stainless option on my 3A; don’t think the noise is authentic.... Overriding reason however, was concern that the whole expensive shebang could be ripped-off (saw it whilst rallying take the manifold along with the rest)... suppose will be OK if you get one that fits well up out of the way of potholes and speed bumps etc Good luck with it Tony Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Rodbr Posted June 17, 2020 Report Share Posted June 17, 2020 HI richard, what ever you choose I suggest that you use plumbers tape when you are fitting it. Wrap the area to go inside the full length of the inserted section possibly 3-4 times round and then clamp up tight. This means that when you do need to split the joint it will easily break due to the barrier caused by the PTFE tape. Also go for good quality clamps, I used Mikalor ones which are wide and do not compress to pipe to a point of distortion. Single bolt to align out of the way to give max clearance. Ralph Whitaker Posted June 17, 2020 Report Share Posted June 17, 2020 I have just fitted the Tourist Trophy twin box system on the 3A. It fitted well, can`t tell noise wise yet as not had the car running, but picking up on Stuarts observation the front of the first (long) silencer runs very close to the floor pan, probably no more than 15mm away, but mine being a post 60000 car I have the shorter rear floor pan, so its only for a couple of inches. On an earlier car with a longer floor in the rear area it might cause some issues. Ralph. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Tom I have had several customers request standard steel systems for the same reason, last one I bought for a TR5 was actually £10 more expensive than the equivalent stainless system as it had to be special ordered. Richardtr3a Posted June 20, 2020 Author Report Share Posted June 20, 2020 I now have the exhaust off the car and I have been measuring the length of the front box and the pipe sizes of the remainder. In the Moss catalogue the front exhaust box looks to be a straight line. The one I had made many years ago has the front pipe 3" offset so that it lines up with the downpipe. Maybe my downpipe has been altered by a previous owner/fitter and does not have the bends as shown in the catalogue. I will be under there this morning and would be very grateful if anyone has a picture showing where the down pipe ends at the gearbox mounting. It is hard to see let alone get a picture. Please help. I remember that there were problems fitting the one that I have and it took some effort to stop it hitting the floor and it went back to Wallington a few times, but this was along time ago. The front 6" of the box had to be reduced in height. ?? It has lasted well and the rear box was a new ST one that I bought and must be correct. Thanks Richard & B. I fitted it and it was pretty straightforward, although the body wasn't on the chassis. It sounds like a TR (with a cam) and seems to be OK after 1150 miles. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Richardtr3a Posted June 20, 2020 Author Report Share Posted June 20, 2020 Thanks Ian. My downpipe ends almost at the back lip of the exhaust mount. and does have the two bends as in the parts book. I have tried a length of plastic pipe in place of my front box and it is very close to the back axle. This must be why my old front exhaust box was at an offset angle and not a straight line from the downpipe to the rear hanger. It looks like a conversation with the makers on Monday. Any one else had a problem with the back axle and exhaust location. Bob must be on holiday or he would have had an input by now. Thanks Richard & B Quote Link to post Share on other sites
