Steering shaft lower rubber UJ

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

putting the car back together today after having the GB and engine out.

Thankfully I tested the steering operation before dropping it off the jack and found that the Ali platforms on the upper face of the rubber UJ were hitting the offside Engine mount.

I tried moving the engine over - but no.

So I put the steering shaft and UJ on the lathe and turned the corners off anything.  I then removed about 3mm of metal from the engine mount leg.

This did the trick. I do not think that the small amount removed will have an effect on the mount strength.

Hi Roger, I thought you used the smaller all metal UJ on lower end of column, or is that on your other car?

Hi Chris,

both the TR's have the rubber UJ.

It must have been very close before I took the engine out. Quite a disturbing knock.

I don't think it would have stopped the steering but was not right.
