I have just rebuilt the whole front suspension and steering, Superflex bushes, new trunnions (lubed with moly not oil due to leakage concerns), new shocks, springs and Pirelli CA67 165 x 15. It drives rather beautifully now... and then a worrying ‘notchiness’ In the steering has developed. So having turned a corner, there is a definite ‘step or notch’ as you return to centre, not near the centre, but as you start to centre. I checked the bushes and they are seated perfectly, all looks well with the suspension. I will get it is on jacks tomorrow, but any thoughts prior to that would be gratefully received. I struggled with the bracket, I had to clamp at the top whilst getting at the bracket nuts, but it looks fine. I also had the wheels aligned so I don’t think it can be that. Hamish, thank you, both top ball joints are nearly new (2017 and about 500 miles travelled since) and well greased, though I will check tomorrow. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Also the car tracks and steers and is a joy to drive. This issue wasn’t present but has ‘appeared’ just yesterday. I’ll give it a once over today, if I can’t sort it then it may be a trip to the specialist. Yarm 783 Posted May 29, 2020 Author Report Share Posted May 29, 2020 Just had the car up on stands and the wheel off. Everything seemed fine. I then checked the UJ near the bulkhead...it was foulingon one of the heater pipes. I had recently fit a set of silicone pipes and now that they have bedded in, they had ‘given’ a little and as it brushed the UJ, you felt a small obstruction. Yes, right now I can feel a collective roll of eyes, well deserved on my part. I did notice on the UJ that it is ‘split’, see photo. I can’t tell from the brown book or parts websites, whether it should be that way, I’d appreciate your thoughts. The angle seems fine and the steering is now back to ‘normal’. Thanks all. John L Posted May 29, 2020 Report Share Posted May 29, 2020 (edited) There looks like a bolt is missing in the coupling the head of the bolt is missing. Also it looks like the steering column is not fitted into the coupling correctly, the cut out in the splines should be where the bolt goes, to stop the column pulling out of the coupling if the jam bolt comes loose. BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted May 30, 2020 Report Share Posted May 30, 2020 (edited) I. Is the bottom UJ seizing? Sold a lot of these over the years simply because they had seized and gone notchy. 2. Are the top coupling and bottom UJ both in alignment rotationally? There is a possibility when assembling to get this wrong if the shaft has a groove all the way round for the clamp bolt to run in, rather than a milled flat as the upper shaft has, which ensures correct alignment.
