I have just invested in the book "Classic Engines, Modern Fuel" by Paul Ireland, and you might be surprised to find that of the fuels tested, super grade with ethanol was not a bad performer and that the ethanol gives benefits for combustion as it is an oxidiser. It was better than some fuels without ethanol. 

Beware of comparing octane across the pond. The US measures it using PON (pump octane number) whereas the UK and Europe use RON (research octane number). I guess Canada will align with the US. that means UK 98 RON is equivalent to US 93 PON.  and UK 95 equates to US 91.

That was a year ago. How did you resolve the backfiring prob Savid? What caused it? Surely the SU carburettors.
