Recently asked a question about welding galvanised sheet, and of course,

back came the information,  - thanks to our forum.

In one of the replies, regular forum contributor, John, came up with the pub name,

                                  'The Engine Fettlers Arms'

Thought this was a tremendous name for a pub, so looking for a little light relief in these current dark days,

anyone think of any other, relevent to our hobby, pub names?

John.

The only running Footman. Mayfair.

The Startled Saint.

The Nobody Inn.

The Jolly Taxpayer, Portsmouth.

The Slug and lettuce, Putney.

They must have been stocktaking when they thought up these.

In my village there is a pub that was named the White Lion, then in Victorian times the landlord commissioned an artist to paint a new sign. The bloke did a really bad job and his idea of a Lion looked rather demented.

Locals started calling the pub The Mad Cat and it has stuck to this day  http://madcatinn.co.uk

A bit off topic, but a chap who ran a pub in the village of Aust, near the Severn Bridge services, put up a sign on the roundabout pointing into the village, with "INN" painted on it. Some wag added another sign pointing in the opposite direction: "OUTT".

Coventry pub names:

“The Herald” at Canley. Was very 1960’s looking. Now demolished.

“The Jaguar” . I went there a couple of times in the 1960’s.

I remember the smell of hash coming up from the basement… Coventry city center pubs were always a bit of a gamble in those days… You might meet Hippies, or Mods, or “The Longford Rockers.” (Who I was told all rode bicycles…)

Also the “Maudsley” and “The Humber”.
Never went to those, but still good old Coventry factory names.

I think there may have been an “Alvis” pub as well.

Coventry has sooooo changed since the 1960’s.

Charlie.

It’s a pub in Hayle Cornwall or at least it was, not sure if it’s still there.

Oz isn't in the same league as the Uk for pub names, place names prominent here, but some have some interesting contents:

Meet the Water Buffalo from Crocodile Dundee

The town of Adelaide River, about an hour south of Darwin near the entrance to Kakadu National Park, has a layered history, starting with its role as a base for workers constructing the Overland Telegraph Line and continuing with its military presence during World War II and an influx of gold prospectors in the 1970s. Today, travelers mainly come to visit Charlie, the water buffalo that Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) hypnotizes to the ground in the outback hit Crocodile Dundee. Charlie passed away in 2000, and since he was a loyal patron of the Adelaide River Inn for so long, he was stuffed and hung for all to appreciate.

Finally what about the bestest name

THE DOGS BO**OCKS

Rod - we have a pub with that very name close to me in Toronto.

Sadly, the beer is not up to British standards and I miss the real thing.

Happy VE day, all.

On the edge of the New Forest there is a pub called The Rising Sun.

In the late 60’s/early 70’s it became somewhat rundown and a couple of letters fell off the front wall so the sign read as follows.......

R sing Su

since then the locals have always known it by this name.
Cheers

I know it well, it was in the late 60's early 70's that I frequented it. It was run by the Chamberlin family, Roy, Bunny, & their two daughters Sarah & Vicky. I "went out" with Vicky for a while.

Our local Stag & Pheasant is known as the Slag & Peasant. There used to be (possibly still is) a pub near Ford at Dunton, officially the Boar's Head, but usually termed the Whore's Bed.
