Z320
I hope with the engine already lowered 5 mm, the tunnel cover fitted on top of the bulkhead lip and 2-3 mm more aluminium off the gearbox housing it fits...? This looks like more effort as it is.... Ciao, Marco Edited April 19, 2021 by Z320
Z320
Hi there, this old lady found her way in my garage for a very reasonable price, perhaps to retire, perhaps to start a 2nd life. But mainly to make photos with here sister (before she moves in the TR) and to try to fit my 2 remaining adapter plates (they do perfectly). One question is also: is the way to move the lever indeed much shorter on the MX-5 gearbox than on the TR gerabox? I guess it is not at all and I made my aluminium lever about 20 mm too long. The photo with the TR gearbox next to my new old lady will be very interesting (if his is an issue of interest at all?). Ciao, Marco, preparing the TR ready for TÜV today (LED bulbs out) Edited May 9, 2021 by Z320
YOW500
Marco. A very nice piece of engineering indeed, all credit to you. Look forward to its test drive. How on Earth do you manage to keep your workshop so clean all the time LOL. Russell

Z320
Hi, shure lots of you heared about the MX-5 gearbox is a LOVELY short shifter, while the TR gb with its long lever is this not at all. But I could not beleave this because the construction in not basicly different....so today it was time to check. In the TR 1st, N, 2nd On the MX-5 gearbox without lever knop! Ups, sorry me, my wife called me for a cafe.

Z320
This is the result from the MX-5 gb (with the missing lever knop) 1st, N, 2nd It's about the same! Why this result? Without a scale we are not objective in our observation (hudge moon low above hill in close distance VS tiny moon high on the firmamen) The long visible TR lever suggests a long way of movement while most of the MX-5 lever is not visible covered by he tunnel and suggests a short movement. Or just wishful thinking.... Ciao, Marco Edited May 13, 2021 by Z320

Z320
Hi, with new TÜV since Wednesday I started today to get the TR gearbox out (after doing other thinks). This is not of special interest but I want to point on a few things. No joke: disconnect the battery. One thing I really bottered (not worried) was to get the propshaft out to the rear. I've been told this does not work, but this way I have to get the MX-5 propshaft in because it sildes in the gearbox! That looks good? Indeed it worked very well to get it out to the rear. Next photo there are 2 things I want to point on: - my modified crossmember (a previous owner made that), this makes it very easys to slide it out with the rear gb mounting to change it - my own made exhaust clamp, after serveral other stuff did not work OK, I overdid it....but I never had problems with it.... That's it already for today, sorry Ciao, Marco Edited May 15, 2021 by Z320
Z320
Hi there, during the week I was busy at work - and had a free day today to put the gearbox in. A last look at the shifter lever in relation to the gearbox tunnel - I hope the MX-5 shifter housing will not touch the H-fame. Next you see my gearbox tunnel is below the lip on the bulkhead (with a foam between), it was this way when I bought the car. Fitting it up on the lip will give me some more [mm] clearance. With the cover off you see the main challange of fittig it: the MX-5 gearbox is about 10 cm longer! I hope I can get the rear end backwards under the tunnel... TR gearbox out with my crane A last time I check the old B+B clutch, it is still tight with 2.2 mm gap on each of the 6 bolts and would be good for some more years. Flywheel off to change the pivot bearing. What makes me wonder looking behind the flywheel the first fime: no oil there at all (sealed?)...? New one in, it fitted lovely with a tight sliding fit With the adapter plate fitted I realized the gap to the bulkhead is OK, just on one point the gap is only 2 mm; with a rasp I made it 5 mm. Work in progress A short brake to compare the gearboxes, the shaft on both ends exactly on the same height The lever may be OK, but I will get problems with the H-frame The new Aisin clutch in, it has the same size as the B+B clutch plate, but the teethed sleeve is Mazda, cover is the old B+B. With the gb on the crane the annoying part of the day started It is not possible to move the rear end under the tunnel first because there is not enough room in the passanger footwell, and not between the air duct as part of the bulkhead and the foor.... My hacksaws had to solve the challenge. In Feierabend for today Ciao, Marco Edited May 22, 2021 by Z320

Z320
After apparently I did the main work yesterday to get the gb in the car, I started to do the main work today. You know what I meen?
Z320
Fitted the nuts on the adapter studs and connected the clutch hydraulic Fitted the rear gearbox mount, the speedo drive and the lowered crossmember Made a new (solid) exhaust clamp (to protect the speedo drive from heat the exhaust pipe will be wrapped later with insulation tape) Dismantle the diff flange, a bit an annoying job to bend out the solid 2 mm wire with the very limited space. The surface for the lip seal is smooth. Now the problems started: the shifter housing does not fit under the console of the H frame (I will cover this later) To fit there it has to be about 40 mm more foreward - perhaps a challange for my second MX-5 gearbox.....one day...sooner or later And the next problem: the shifter is to high, it touches the console from below. Because I don't want to cut the console out much more I have to lower it the red way - or better the green one.... Well, it can't work all on the first attempt... Ciao, Marco
