my new gearbox? (Mazda MX-5 to TR)

Recommended Posts

result: OK, means: weak

the bell is very slightly bended or not exactly drilled,

not exact enough for a template, the scale I used is another thing...

Ups, the adaptors are already delivered, I'm really surprised about the laser cut surface! Tomorrow will be first fit, please keep fingers crossed for me.

Thanks Russell and Andi, thank you very much, all worked well, fit was 100% on first attempt, the 8 mm drills are exaxtly to the point they have to be for the 5/16" bolts! Btw, the bar is on

Talking of gearbox changes, back in the 8o`s when I was involved with Jaguar racing we converted a V12 XJS from a GM 400 auto box to a Cosworth T6 manual 5 speed by a cut and shut of the two bell hous

I think the overall spigot length of the input shaft changed between 4 and 6 cylinder TR.

Thanks,

that explains the different lengths shown on the manual and found on my gearbox

Hi,

before I go on with this

4IpHSSzOo0Jr9Wrf62b7-5CDAVPl56_6wWnRBMCY

I thought it would be a good idea to check if this

Q07h9hoTMj6XltOnGI6pR7tvLhdSd5fQpBWvSjEE

fits in here without grinding anywhere

GTE96cxaW-UTJ1i8qoh_BrtVCjT0nASPgHDxX1_N

first "problem", gearbox touches the TR frame, I know, this part of the gearbox I have to cut off

rJwnoNw2MuMXnNDq9Tn5114kubWFzhpavqn0xk3m

solved for the moment, "frame" is off now

HZR_WBrHpbI-QRaTUKZSbWSlZLvXChKJMbsi8X1z

Ok, an adator plate is needed on my 4A anyway, the GB fits not direct on the TR6 steel plate

hsvbrGlst26Iu24M_D-YRqIt3SykgGA6vgrQG00z

in this position the flywheel

avVgwU4bIzruhVEycof_5qIb6fFqOWh0lZw2UQBd

touches here

jHvtnrszJ8lRerovoUj9OpUO9yzhQsloh9D2KRMb

this is the original clutch mechanism, fixed for the moment with threaded bars, but there no space for that in the TR,

an idea will come....

other side, here the electric starter has to be, I guess a space saving hight torque starter will be a good way to go

Well, I'm pleased, this could work, only needs some time and patience.

:D

Ok,

picked up all dimensions (sorry for the blurred photo because of resposibility)

Drawing is also ready, it's a CAD 1:1 dwg ready for laser cutting

ogQKAD7PwGxWrWgGQjj6TTT_XX2Pj9sNERBtNvDQ

I ordered online, that was surprising easy and a 5 minutes job, delivery is withhin 2 weeks.

Because of a minimum order value I had to take 3 of them, price drops rapidly ordering not 1 but 3 or 5.

So if it fits and there is any interest for one of them for your own DIY project, please let me know. Price is affordable.

Ups!

I gave the order for the adaptor plates without checking

if the MX5 gearbox shaft will be deep enough in the splines of the new friction plate!

And without picking up the dimesions of the new spigot bush!

Well, with some luck this will fit.

The reason I said this is because I've been trying to get a drive for a Brantz trip meter and the pulses from the drive don't work till later models.

Trevor

Brantz do a pulse generator that plugs into the back of the speedo and then you plug the cable into the sensor

https://www.brantz.co.uk/product-page/smiths-jaeger-sensor-m12-fitting-square-drive-pin-brm12

Was this what you were looking for? As far as I'm aware it's only Brantz that sells it, I haven't seen it stocked anywhere else

Thanks Philip but these are only any good for Mk1 or NA as they are known, I tried the electronic board one but failed to find the correct pulses at the speedo head even with help from Brantz finally went for a Satellite one for the Mazda still use the display on my cable sensor in the TR.

Hi,

the internet is my friend and while I'm waiting for the adaptors I ordered the friction plate.

 1pjaDlRoeb3YLxyxaR7AfL2ifWkUehiVpqosK3N-   q4sPTHw2-BqhQyjQw8UqjHTesDiA_WLb0o0kLvpd

No Borg+Beck but quality badge and mostly the same, fits the 215/150 mm TR clutch cover and the 22 teeth MX-5 gearbox shaft without any modification.

For affortable 50 Euro inkl shipping it was mine.

Thank you all for finger crossing, things worked VERY well!

All drills of the adaptor plates are laser cut 8.0 mm in diameter, this is tight for a 5/16" bolt!

Anyway all bolts fit without any problem with the adaptor on the gearbox.

xOHfu-zNH1w2c2ASQofpGj78rFlCoPFHPlJS-kWG

With the adaptor on the engine its tight for 3 of them, I guess they will run better by drilling them 8.1 mm - or I use a file.

qNyiTJxhDxKHvGqePulYxgNrchAGR25lCa1gZuHP

Also both dowels (black permanent marker) are exactly where they have to be, the 8.0 drills I drilled 9.5 mm,

this fits  but does not go in, so next I drill them 9.6 mm or ream them.

That seems to be very precise Marco. I don’t think 0.1 mm would be a concern, but you could take 0.05 mm from the opposite sided holes to shift the ring to (maybe?) spread the off-set. I think I would just do as you describe.

Viel Spass,

Waldi

Hi Waldi,

tomorrow I will buy the suitable 9.6 mm drill and first make the both dowels to go through the adapter,

than I will see which of the other drills have to move.

I thought the adapterplate is there to fit the MX5 Gearbox to the TR4/6 engine? Or did I miss something?

Hi Jochem,

you are absolutely right!

You know I own a 4 cylinder, and on this the lower 4 drills are not bolted on the engine, they only hold a cover made of steel sheet.

You can see that on the second photo.

So sadly my only master to check the correct position of this 4 drills is this empty TR gearbox.

And sadly my gearbox was the only way for me the pick up the dimensions, so this is pretty "wrong".

But our mate Wolfgang offered me to support me with a TR6 engine plate to check this more precise.

This might look painful, but once picked up it was no problem to "adjust" all drills.

Now it fits with dowels and bolts on Wolfgang's engine plate, this goes back tomorrow at the Stammtisch
