Hi Rich,

welcome to the forum.

You must have a problem on the engine bay plate.

There is no code 254.  However the 25 does correspond to TRiumph conifer green

Be careful with the rattle cans as the paint match can be most interesting.

Hi Rich,

 what colour is your car.?

254 is not a TRiumph colour code although it may show on paint supplier lists as Graham has shown.

The commission plate looks new. I would suggest that whoever stamped it out had the wrong number or a number off a tin. The trim number is missing.

Thanks guys for taking the time. Something is odd. The car was restored some time ago and the plate does look new . I guess I will have to take it to a paint shop to be matched. The car is defiantly green!!

Thanks for the paint codes I don't know how to interpret this? Are all these colours coming up with a 254 search!

Hi Rich

As Roger says be careful of standard rattle cans even in the "correct" colour. Depending on how old your paint is it can be miles off.

When i needed a rattle can i took an item (vent flap) to my local wholesale automotive paint factors, they scanned it and the scanner gave them the ingredients to mix the colour then it doesn’t matter if someone cocked the paint code up.

Usually they can supply tin’s, touch ups or rattle cans (1K) and my colour was spot on.

But if it’s a large or a noticeable could well be best left to a professional.

Cheers                  Keith

Hi, according to our records your TR6 had a major rebuild carried out by Northern TR Centre in 1995/96 when it received a reconditioned chassis and a Heritage shell. It also had a colour change to British Racing Green from its then colour of Silver Grey. Prior to that it had been Red.  The commission plate as noted by others is not an original and was presumably changed for a reproduction plate during its rebuild.

If so I may know who painted it.

+1 Font and size looks wrong to me too.

+2 I have looked at my name plate and have to agree with Kevo, my font size is much larger and the impression of the stamping much deeper.

Thanks aston I don't think there is any doubt anymore that the name plate is not original. I knew the car had had a new body shell as I have the receipt. I didn't know it wasn't the original colour and I'm not sure how I feel about this. I googled the paint code when I looked at the car, saw BRG in the search results but didn't open the page and thought no more. Ironically I love the colour but as you can tell I'm not a Triumph expert. The car is a credit to the Northern TR Centre as it is still in excellent condition 20+ years later.

I am intrigued to learn more from ntc as to who painted it  and from saffrontr as to how they know so much about my car and any more info.

Thanks again aston for taking the time to post a reply to me

Regards Richard

Hi Richard,

There have been three previous owners of your TR in the TR Register over the years the first from 1993. To find out the original build details of your TR6 you can get a Heritage certificate from the British Motor Museum at https://certificates.britishmotormuseum.co.uk/certificate/. This certificate will give you details of the original colour, trim, engine number, build date, where it was despatched to, original options etc. The original commission plate for your TR6 should be as per the following one which is the correct style for your TR. There have been many variances of the plates over the years and blank reproduction ones can be obtained from Roger Hinds who has had the majority of the different styles reproduced. You will still need to have it stamped. I can supply contact details for Roger if you send me a PM.

regards

Derek

Hi Derek

Thank you for this but replacing the plate is not high on my list at the moment. However I am intrigued by how the club knew it it had had a major rebuild, where, using what parts and when?

Richard - each TR model has a Registrar whose job it is to keep records of all members cars, when and if members submit details - Derek ( SaffronTR) is the TR6 Registrar so he has access to all the historical records and info submitted by previous owners - hence why Derek perhaps knows more about your car than you do  - I am sure it you ask him he will happy to provide more info

cheers Rich
