TR6 braided injector lead replacement

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have stainless steel braided injector leads on my 1971 TR6, I have noticed some weeping from the top of the No.5 lead connector at the banjo on the MU.

Does anyone know where I can get a single replacement lead complete with connectors?

Appreciate any advice

Thanks

Are you sure its the actual line and not the copper washer seal on the banjo that leaking

To be honest not sure, need to remove the MU anyway to replace O Ring so can check, thank you, when I look down at the MU the fuel is weeping from the top of the banjo "connector" where the line goes into the connector, does that make sense?

I would also check again, once you have removed the hoses, you can do a pressure test with compressed air at 5 bar with soapy water which will give you a good indication.

#2 and 5 are more prone than the others, also for plugging the injectors with pieces of the O-rings. Search the forum before starting the job, there is loads of information on how to do this properly, and this also shows the many pitfalls.

It does sound like the line is leaking but as Waldi says if your taking it off anyway check it with compressed air and soapy water. If you need a new line I do have a second hand set in the garage going spare

Hi, I will probably have to replace my braided injector lines soon or later, by black nylon ones. For this operation, do I need:

- new banjo bolts for outlets 2 & 5? Or keeping the actual ones is OK (they were changed 2 years ago, as the MU)?

- 2 new pedestal seals (cf attached picture, parts 103 & 104) or doesn't need to touch these? Also 2 years old only.

I will change the MU housing oring (part 116 on the picture). Something else to change if the aim is to change injector hoses only?

Thanks :)

I would remove the MU to properly replace the 2 rear hoses (#2 and 5). Make sure no pieces of O-ribg are left behind. You will need new O-rings for the hose fittings to MU, but also A large O-ring between MU to pedestal. Make sure they are Viton. Same applies for the pedestal lip seals; were the ones you fitted viton?
I got mine from Neil Ferguson, as part of my MU overhaul. This ensues you get the correct hardness too. And he can crimp new nylon tubes on your exiting fittings. Highly recommended.

The large Oring was provided by KMI to my knowledge, must be Viton. Pedestal seals, I hope they are Viton too! When the MU is removed, these 2 lip seals HAVE to be touched or not?

The seals must be made from Viton B grade and not A as this grade is not much better than the original Nitrile rubber. B grade Viton can cope with 15% ethanol.

Ok thanks! I'll pay attention to it.

The fittings that I have seen used on S/S braided PI injector leads are Aerospace type as manufactured by Aeroquip in Wales, with PTFE tubing. I am doubtful that they would fit the original nylon 66 tubing, so you would have to closely examine the seating for bad machining or burrs. It maybe that you could have that end reworked by a hose specialist like the one near me!  In the past I have had problems with the original Lucas fittings with this type of problem. But of course it could be a seal gone as others have pointed out. Have you got the original Lucas leads with fittings as they are becoming like hens teeth to obtain? I took all my fittings off my old leads had them re-plated and reused them on new tube.

I've made lines in the past using  the directions in the Lucas Red Book . The  nylon pipe fitting clamp made I from 2 pieces of pine drilled  with a 1/4"hole. Vitessesteve has the Red Book available here:

I did cheat a bit and heated the end of nylon pipe in hot water before fitting. A kit is available to do  this at a reasonable price:
