Oh dear, glad I’ not a moderator.

The situation with the virus worsens, also in our country. And people are forced to stay at home, “no escape” for some of us, and we all react in different ways to this, are very concerned.

I encountered some sharp reactions in my daily work too. We should all have a little more patience with each other, and at the same time also not write things we know will upset others.

Warm greetings from Waldi

HELP THE NHS ~

I've let my adjoining empty house (fully furnished) to four NHS nurses free of charge during this National Emergency.

We have a very large General Hospital at the top of the road. Some of these nurses have to travel large distances to the hospital.

Now these nurses are in walking distance to the hospital. My late wife was a Nurse and I'm sure she would approve of my actions.

It's the least we can do for our 'Angels' who work very long and dedicated hours.

When this emergency is over my Grand-daughter and her family will move into the house.

Tom.

Class Tom.............. They won’t hear us but......... We will be out clapping again at 20:00 sharp....

Fair enough John..... However, this is something extraordinary- certainly never experienced in my life time - and I therefore think we have to realise and appreciate how important it is, not only to show appreciation, but to bring people, neighbours and family together at this time....... Like everyone, I’m not currently seeing my wider family and as per previous post the nieces and nephews are all doctors working god forsaken hours with Dad (also a doctor) seriously ill...... The instant messaging / togetherness just makes you feel good even tho we are all clapping at other ends of the Country: You cannot knock that.

Plenty of reasons to clap this evening....

Good on you Tom, well done that man you are a star. I bet they are four very grateful nurses, I know how close you are to that hospital.

Well done again, and I hope you don’t have to stay away from your home for too long.

Well done Tom - very generous.

As this crisis rumbles on it is becoming increasingly clear that the people attempting to manage it are not up to the task.

I doubt that it’s the fault of the Government, although they are the ones catching the flack, more likely it’s PHE and the relevant bit of the Civil Service. (At the very top, not those delivering the service). Is there likely to be any accountability when it’s all over? Probably not, it’ll all be swept under the carpet so that the same inept team can carry on with their mismanagement and retire with their gold plated pensions and their knighthoods.

Good luck to Dominic Cummings with his campaign to make the Civil Service accountable. I didn’t support his Brexit policy but that’s a done deal now. He has my full support on the Civil Service.

Hi Guys,

I have refrained from adding my twopennith but I find that but for a few knowledgeable people the bulk is conjecture and fear mongering following the line of the MSM.

AS some will know my wife suffered a potentially catestrophic accident but rather than go straight to hospital as would have been the case normally we waited as we knew the NHS was under pressure. We waited until it became clear it was more serious then we both thought. The staff were fabulous and treated my wife as normal. My son waited outside for three to 4 hours and during that time did not see a single ambulance arrive and the A&E wore neither gowns or face masks. This could be for lack of supply or down to the way the virus is being treated in my area.

I find the crass comments and blame culture abhorrent when dealing with an unknown illness. There seems to be an expectation that we should be ready for any and all emergencies and have unending supplies of equipment and PPE.

Those of us older generation remember the isolation hospitals that were in most large towns 40 to 50 years ago and also the erradication of TB in this country. Here we are fifty years later and it is back, I know why but dare not say for fear of being judged a racist. The question is should we have kept these hospitals fully founded and operational just in case?????????????

In my humble opinion and it is only that the downfall of the NHS is due to the management structure that we have in place that does not work, has no co-hesiveness, hugely expensive and damaging to front line medics. The over worked doctors who were offered a pay rise for fewer hours, the expensive beaurocratic management of hospital trusts.

A few examples of the downside of local management, a computer based records system that constantly breaks down and due to a contract for lifelong maintenance crippling costs just to maintain it.

Records and file export. I lost my sight in my right eye last year and had direct steroid injection into my eye and a subsequent operation which was gruesome and I wont trouble you with gory details but the issue is that the tests and records that were done in my local hospital had to be redone at the specialist hospital in Glasgow because the software used was not compatible. That was a huge waste of time and resources and my surgeon said it was because each Health Authority went for the cheapest option and could be as much as 20 years to get uniformity.

To blame the Government for shortfalls in planning is crass and ill informed conjecture without knowledge of how things work.

For a bit of perspective have a look at the following videos and perhaps there is an alternative viewpoint.

So in conclusion I do not wish offend anyone nor downplay the seriousness of the situation. I do however need to vent my anger and frustration at the younger generation who consistently ignore restrictions and go to parks and congregate together. I was young once I think and there is natural invincibility gene that young lose over time as they reach maturity.

Keep well and safe and perhaps we need to keep hope alive and concentrate more on what we can do to handle isolation. Go and talk (respectful distance applies) to the old lady on her own down the street when taking daily exercise. People are going stir crazy and need hope not despair armchair experts are abounding with too much time and too little to interest themselves.

The nearest city is @20 miles away.

Excercising locally.......I don't think so. Need to get a 'stinger" !

An excellent post Rod. You left out Blair's mad rush to build more hospitals that has saddled the NHS with mountains of debt. Hope you and your wife stay well, and I wish her a full and quick recovery.

Just be glad you're not in America.    CV19 has led to FOUR MILLION more people applying for gun licences, and a cyclist's Lycra has nifty little pockets on their bum, just right for a Walther PPK.

But then you'd have one too, wouldn't you?

Hi Jim ~

I had to have all my antique rifles deactivated thanks to Rubbish Blair! Those rifles I could shoot were only used for target practice.

Isn't it wonderful that Blair withdrew our guns then started an illegal war against Islam and expected our sons to join the armed forces.

You'll note that his useless son never, ever joined the armed forces!   When will Blair receive his judgement?? (Chilcott).

Tom.

On the subject of CV and hindsight, there is an interesting piece in the S Times today.

Apparently Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet has castigated the Government for acting too late. “This is a national scandal” he said. “We knew in the last week of January that this was coming”. But in late January he tweeted that “Coronavirus has moderate transmissibility and relatively low pathogenicity. There is no reason to foster panic”.

Talk about a ‘U turn’.

I suspect some of it is driven by the media Ian - framing the questions in such a way to get a headline and/or criticism of the Government. No one could have predicted back in January the scale of the thing and where we, and the rest of Europe and the US are now I'm sure.

The people that probably should have acted more responsibly are those that went off to far flung places since mid/late February and are now bleating about the UK not helping them get home.

Our daughter is in Melbourne at the moment, having been there since the end of November on a year long travel visa. She is safe and staying with the daughter of our friends who emigrated ~15 or 16 years ago. Up to now she, and we, have been happy that she is safe and doesn't need to come home yet - hoping that by November she should be able to travel home normally. As things escalate though she may have to find a way home sooner. She had just found a job in a Gym (as she is a fitness fanatic) when the Oz authorities closed them down - she did one shift!
