Vent lid seal

Recommended Posts

Tried to replace the vent lid seal on my car, only to discover the rubber is too thick. I double checked with the TR ‘specialist ‘ supplier before buying, and was told it was a quality part made in the UK. The original measures about 7mm thick, the reproduction part is 11mm thick. Also the 3 holes weren’t drilled out. I’m sick and tired of **** quality repro parts. Not surprisingly the vent lid itself doesn’t close properly or sit flush.

Does anybody know where I can get a decent one from?

Hi Paul,

there was a fairly big thread on this topic last year.

Waldi (I think) came up with remedial work to sort his. Razor blade and a steady hand.

It would appear that they are all too thick.

Yes, I contributed to that tread. Mine came from Moss, also 11 mm thick.

I used an angle grinder for the last fine tuning, but be carefull, the wheel may grip the rubber and your fingers.

I first made sure the (new) lid fitted properly, and then trimmed the bottom but also some of the rear and around the hinges until the lid was nice and flush with the scuttle. Maybe a 1-2 hr job, and it now fits good, search for vent lid tr6 on Google and you will probably find that post.

I'm now happy with my seal, but looking at Andrews silicone tube "design" obove, you can't beat simplicity:) Simple is beautiful.

Great fix Drew.

Going this way with mine as even after lots trimming it still doesn't look quite right so the bin it is.

Again another case of poor parts supply and a waste of resources.

I was going to stick it down but given that nothing much sticks to silicone I haven’t bothered and it hasn’t budged yet.
I guess that a squeeze of silicone inside the tube would stick to the bodywork and form a bead inside the tube to fix it.
I used a bit of gasket material under the hinge to bring the lid up flush with the scuttle.
