883 GOH - Triumph TR4 - 1962 - Green - Rallied car.

As per the title, a friend of mine has asked on behalf of ( I believe a brother in law) Gerald Bailey, who was a prior owner who used to rally this car.  It used to have a Surrey top and was, according to Gerald - last know to have gone to Scotland.

I did a search on this forum and found reference to that registration < here >  in a post by 'Ryan',  Ryan Pickering, in Southampton, who was discussing rallying.  However that member only posted 32 times with his last post in March 2014.  He last visited these pages in August 2015.

However going back through the archives I see his first post was this .  .

Posted October 12, 2011 - "Hello, I have only just spotted this forum really since purchasing what is Roger's old car after the Hughes rally. Lisa and I are looking forward to our first event in our "new" TR. It may be our first time out in a quicker car than the old vitesse but we will still be trying, no point really being there otherwise. Look forward to seeing you at scrutineering on Friday night, cheers."

I've did a quick search on the TSSC forum but there's no mention of  'Pickering'  or "833 GOH" , nor even of a green TR4 with surrey top.

I note from the DVLA website that this TR4 survives with  Tax Due: 1 April 2020  and its  Date of last V5C (logbook) issued: 26 March 2015.   As Ryan Pickering bought the car in 2011, and last posted on here in 2014, one might presume he then sold her the following springtime, or else it passed to another member of his family.?   Perhaps someone here is, or knows of, the current owner and is willing to drop Gerald a note.  He (Gerald) is pretty aged now but is still interested to know how the old car was doing.

Thanks very much,

Pete

Hi,

We looked after the TR4 when Ryan owned and rallied it. I will try and get in touch with him for info :)

Here we go Pete.

Gerald might appreciate this.

883GOH was prepared and rallied very successfully some twenty years ago by Len Olds, a Cornish TR owner since 1976.

The copyright of this shot remains with the photographer. It shows Len and Helen Olds on the Regis Rally 13th October 2001

I took this shot of Len and Andy Ballantyne in action on the Powderham Historic Rally of Devon 9th March 2002

The car was subsequently sold to another long-standing Cornish TR campaigner, Roger Bricknell from Bodmin.

Enjoy

Hi Pete

I bought 883GOH from Gerald in 1998 with another donor TR4 car 358EXV.  The cars were taken to west Cornwall so not sure where the 'last known to have gone to Scotland' came from.  A bit of the history I remember is that Gerald rallyed the car in the early 60s' and was a member of the London Motor club;  I can remember that as I had to take the club badge off of the car grill and give to Gerald to keep.  The car was taken off the road in 1968 when Gerald was assigned to America with EMI if I remember right.  At one stage, the car was stored in Kent, where a tree fell on the barn and a beam then landed on the roof of the car (see photo).  When back in England Gerald purchased a second TR4 in the 80's as a donor car to rebuild 883GOH, but never got around to it with running  his business in Exeter.  He advertised the two cars in 1998 and I purchased them both.

I rebuilt 883GOH over the next 2 to 3 years, and uprated the car to do historic road rallying - which I had got the bug for after navigating on Le Jog in 1997.  I even sold my TR5 to fund the project.  All the original panels were kept and I only purchased two new sills, the base of the wings had new metal shaped and welded in, even the ally hardtop was beaten out, and the surry frame straightened.  The second photo is of the car in 2001 fresh after the rebuild.  The car was rallyed by myself with three diifferent navigators over the next 4 years, and we won three events in it, two HRCR clubmans championship events and the 3 day Circuit of Wales in 2003.

Due to a sudden illness and going down with ME/CFS in December 2005, I was unable to drive for a while and actually thought I'd never be able to drive 'in anger' again so sold the car to Roger Bricknell in 2007.  Roger then successfully rallyed the car and won another three events with it I believe, before selling it to Ryan Pickering (who was one of my navigators).  Ryan won a couple events with it as well, proving the car was very competitive in any drivers hands.

883GOH is probably the best TR I've ever owned (out of the 8....so far), so much so that the donor car that came with 883GOH is now in the process of being rebuilt as a copy!   I've been working on 358EXV for several years now, but seem to have less time every year; and last year I did my first season hillclimbing and time just disappears maintaining and trying to improve the TR4 road car I have, but it will get done.

I have many more photos of 883GOH which I can share with Gerald, just PM me

Regards

Len

Many thanks Len,  thanks guys - that's brilliant.  I'll drop my friend a line with a link to this thread so that he can see your, Tom and Julian's replies and photos.

After seeing the tree damage and rotten sills, I'm very glad the car survived to have been enjoyed in so many rallies.  The car look great as seen when you had it.

So the history is being filled in ..but where did it go after Ryan sold it ?

Pete.

Good to see those photos again Julian - Thanks,  If I remember correct, I think Rodney just beat me to the line - close competetion for a 150hp TR6 against a 4 cylinder!

After Ryan had the car, I think 883 GOH was bought by a Yorkshire firm that had 3 or 4 cars that they rallyed, they did have a youtube clip of 883GOH on a rolling road being tested and tuned, but couldn't find it today when I searched - probably it's now too old - or else it's been deleted

Hello again Pete

More of the recent competition history of 883GOH is coming to light.

If you PM me with your email address, I will forward what else I have discovered.

This is a Peter Baker image from the January 2015 issue of Motor Sport magazine and shows Ryan Pickering and Andy Ballantyne on their way to victory in the 2014 Rally of the Tests.

Hi

Ryan is a friend of mine so if you want any info. Please PM me.

He sold the car and bought a MK1 escort as he had various recurring issues with the TR4 which swallowed a large amount of money every time he did a big event. Familiar territory I know.

He sold the escort and is now running a very nice pub in Cheshire.

regards

Tony

Before taking 883GOH rallying, Len gave the TR a bit of a shakedown at the Portreath Drag Meeting in June 2000.

Here we see Len and Rodders going head to head in blinding sunlight.

Hello,

Now as i approach 85 and await delivery of an electric scooter ! I thought I should fill in the missing history of " our TR " date 1962 /3

The cars very  first owner was in the RAF and posted ouside the uk - he decided to sell it -  via a garage near his parents  in  Burnaston Derbyshire

By luck I had arrived in Etwall the near by village  employed by EMI Electronics to cover "Electronic Equipment " in the area from the A5 to the Scottish Boarder

I, also ex RAF - Radar. at the time I had a Triumph Herald coupe  and a company 1300 Ford  Cortina  - this soon seen by visiting staff from Hayes as incapable of over taking the frequent coal truck streams.

So a deal was struck - I purchase the TR and insurance - EMI  cover running costs fuel and maintainance due to it being 883 a Surrey top version. -surpisingly i had no difficulty in receiving assitance from Hayes based staff - each month the car being inspected - my local garage in Etwall for service etc etc all was well  the owner just happened to be ex RR.

Then the Beatles  arrived EMI became a music machine - and all this complex expensive electronic "stuff " - like the cat scanner - side lined - with job changes.  I am in the Las Vegas when I received a telex in hotel call home.

Sad part: - 883 tucked up in a Barn on a Farm in Chartam  Kent - A large beam of a 150/200 barn fell across the roof of 883 (as per photo on here) in the storm of  1987 - with great sadnees I collected car and now based in Devon

Our new company took a mass of my time so hope of my involvment in a rebuild was impossible or to attempt a rebuild so Mr Olds took it into his care and when rebuilt gave me the thrill of one more last ride

Kind Regards to you all

Gerald Bailey
