Low ratio TR6 Crown wheels

Recommended Posts

Dan,

At a guess that could be from something like a Standard Atlas van. You could try Revington TR, I think they had one replicating a period Works Rally/Race support vehicle. They MIGHT have a spare. Worth a call.

Alternatively, try Canley Classics who have also restored one in Works livery. See link https://www.canleyclassics.com/our-museum/atlas-van/

Good luck with your search, though for the life in me I can't imagine why you would want it in a TR6?

Thanks for sharing the link Hamish, what a nice tool! The person who built it deserves credit, especially for sharing it with others.

Thanks Dave, I will try Canleys to see if they have anything. It seems 4.875 upwards was as you say a standard atlas van

The TR no longer has its original engine and has something that revs a lot higher, hence the lower gear ratio

Thanks Hamish, Revington was the first place  tried, they have the 6.67 or 4.55 all the others have gone unfortunately.

So the diff is back from being rebuilt, they had some issues with the rear cover not fitting due to the larger crown wheel and having to put a different TR6 cover on.

The original is a the V3229 casting which is often listed as the TR6/TR250 diff casing.  The new one has a V3135 Stanpart casting number on it and 308393 on the other side.  As you can see from the picture, the new cover doesn't have the cast feature which helps keep oil against the crown wheel and narrows the case in this area.

Any idea what the new larger case is from? all the mounting pints look to be the same and its a single piece case

larger crown wheel

So the new CW&P were different physical dimensions as well as different gear ratio's? That must have been a challenge to fit? How much different were they?

I believe its thicker to compensate for the different pinion height on the lower ratio so it must move the edge of the crown wheel across

I didn't fit it, I got a transmission specialist to do it as its a different tooth pattern and a bit fiddly to set up from what I have heard.

Go on, stop teasing us, tell us what you're putting in there!

......a couple of pictures to explain

ones real and ones 3D printed in plastic for mock up purposes

240Nm of torque at zero RPM and a 8KRPM Rev limit -  hence the low diff ratio as it won’t have a gearbox, just the overdrive.

I have one similar on my TR3a. the attachment eyes were damaged  while on original car thus cut off. It’s has a larger oil capacity for my LSD.

i think I was told it’s off a 2500 estate

not quite the same as above picture as that has more “wing” bracing.

That is a saloon 2000/2.5 cover with the ears cut off.  Estate is the same as Stag and has 4 studs coming out the back that a big steel support plate bolts to.

Sensible mod on LSD.

Looks like the handbrake cable rubs against it.

Cheers

Thanks Peter

that makes sense and yes the handbrake cable is close. I intend to sleeve it /clip it so it doesn’t chafe.

Dan,

I have a cover like the one on the right on my race TR6 with a 4.1 cwp with LSD. The cover required a minor amount of grinding internally to clear the crown wheel.

The other photo that I've attached is another different cover that I have, again for the race TR6, with a 3.9 cwp with LSD. Don't know what that's off either.
