Jammaster
Hello! I'm in the way for rebuilding a 4synch gearbox from a TR6 69 (Lucas PI, no overdrive). I have found a curious hole on the back/noze of the box (before the transmission shaft). This hole is below the casting. I presume, a little amount of gear oil will travel to the end small balls bearing. (the reason why there was a spie seal here at the end of the box) Probably, this hole is a breather or for condensation. But, the breathe hole must be on the top cover assy (in front, a 2mm hole ?) ? Am i right here is my "suspect hole": Best regards from France. JLuc Edited December 8, 2019 by Jammaster
RogerH
Hi JLuc i think that hole is on the top surface of the extension section - compare to the attachment lugs. Have a look at item #22 on the Moss WebCat https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr5-6/clutch-transmission-drivetrain/gearboxes-components/external-gearbox-tr5-6-1967-76.html Roger
Jammaster
Thank, but do you think this hole is necessary ? My new balls bearing (the one on the end of the extension) is a sealed/water resist one. The old were "opened" like a normal BBearing. And strange, my new bbearing (the sealed one) have a CLIP around it (like the big ones on the main shaft and secondary shaft) In add, It seem i haven't got the breathe hole on my top cover :-(

Jammaster
I'm drunk! this hole is effectively on top of the extension!!! shame! But, what is the best mounting ? Keep an open BBearing (who is lub by the rare amount of gear oil) or put my new one (sealed) ?
Z320
Issue: gearbox, no special model Please see photo for the breather drills Edited December 8, 2019 by Z320

ed_h
If that bearing fits otherwise, I think I'd remove the seal facing the inside of the gearbox. Ed
Jammaster
Exactly what i have done Edited December 8, 2019 by Jammaster
ed_h
Good solution. Now you have a double oil seal there. I wish I'd thought of that. Ed
John L
Make sure there is plenty of grease on the seal side of the bearing or the seal will burn with no lubrication.
ed_h
That's true--seals do need a little lube to last. The outer seal will run dry and maybe fail quickly. Then the bearing's seal will be the only seal. Ed
Jammaster
Yep, you are all right. 'll disassemble the hub for making a little hole (3mm) on the external bearing seal.
