As a present and for experimental use a TR friend f mine gave me a set of asbestos containing brake pads. Their surface is brown-beige and this reminded me of a set of drum brakes from a TR6 and a clutch friction plate from a TR2/3 in my storage (right). On the other hand I own new standard brake pads, mintex brake pads an new brake shoes, and remember new clutch friction plates - all with grey surface. No matter how much better they are compared to modern materials they are very bad for you. Nobody knows just how much contamination you need before it is too late. He and me agree I will not drive them seriously, they are just for my interest. This should not be a excuse, but my father started his apprenticeship at a Mercedes-Benz workshop in the 60-ies. He told me, he and my unkle had to change asbestos brake pads and brake shoes daily - and used compressed air to clean the calipers! They are both in their late 70-ies and are still in pretty good shape, both smoking cigaretts like a chimney. But asbestos IS dangerous, and to avoid any health disease it could be interesting for all of us to differ asbestos from modern material. I'm shure their are still lots of them out their. The clutch friction plate for example I got as a present for measuring - without any indication for asbestos, because the owner himself not knows! stuart Posted December 2, 2019 Report Share Posted December 2, 2019 Your right about the colour being the giveaway to asbestos material, brown in colour is asbestos and the grey is the newer material in general.Also with the brake pads you can often feel the metal embedded in it to make it work which is why your discs on moderns dont last as well. Waldi Posted December 2, 2019 Report Share Posted December 2, 2019 Hi Marco, not the answer you are looking for, but there are several different colors of asbestos, like blue and white, some are known to be carcinogenic, some not (yet). But that can only be seen through a microscope, looking at the individual fibres. If we suspect asbestos to be present at my work, it is tested by a specialised company before any work can start. Charlie D Posted December 2, 2019 Report Share Posted December 2, 2019 I remember reading a story about apprentices who worked at the Ferodo factory in Chapel-en-le-Firth, sometime in the 1950’s Apparently for their lunchtime “Fun” they would jump out of an upstairs window and land in a skip fill of asbestos. I used to work in a Naval Dockyard and the same sort of stories used to abound of apprentices having snowball fights with asbestos.
