I can't hear my indicators!

Recommended Posts

I can't hear that my indicators are working (and dash light too dim to see in daylight). So, I'm thinking of fitting a 'beeper'. I've got one that works on towing electrics and I was wondering if anyone else has fitted similar. There's an earth, a left and a right connection - which I thought I could connect along with the 3 connection flasher unit.

Lots of us have done that Roger and a search will bring up several threads on the subject.  I'm sure yours can be made to work - do you have any connection details for it?  If it's just a beeper It might be as easy as wiring it in parallel with the dash tell-tale, using just one of the 'input' leads (or maybe both in parallel).

edit - I've just found the data here:

The thing seem to have relay in it as well as a beeper so its a bit more complicated maybe.

Try connecting orange to + and black to earth. If it buzzes you may only need those two across the dash lamp.

Why not just buy a 12Volt beeper with two wires, & connect across the indicator warning lamp. They are dirt cheap on Ebay etc.

For example

+1 but with a different buzzer. It must be easy if I have done it!

Same one available at CPC for even less, but I have this towing one going spare, so thought I might give it a try.

The sort you have is designed to beep when a level of current is passed through it. I.E. the 21W indicator bulbs on the trailer.

To use as a warning you would need to break your existing circuit to either front or rear indicators, on both sides, & insert the "beeper" in that circuit, then it will see current passing though it.  Quite a lot of re-wiring IMO.

Ah yes - the beeper doesn't work if the trailer lamps are blown, according to the data sheet so you would need a suitable load on the green and yellow output leads (no need to cut any wires though). As you say - not really worth the effort unless you were going to fit a trailer socket too.

This is what I fitted years ago as I could not see the repeater nor hear the click when driving with aeroscreens or just the screen fitted.  It is loud!

Simple fit - one wire from the existing repeater lamp to the new buzzer/flasher, one wire from new buzzer/flasher to earth.  Mount the thing with a bit of bent aluminium under the dash.

I don't like the high-pitched beepers, so fitted one of these (many years ago when you could get them from Maplins):

It gives a deeper buzzing note rather than a piercing tweet, which I find preferable and which is plenty loud enough even when driving on aeroscreens, which I do all the time.

I usually drive along with 1 or 2 other cars and flashing headlights in the mirror or a call over the CB does it for me. As long as I'm not tail end Charlie, but then as far as I know I never leave them on

Actually Chris - you've given me an idea......I could connect the indicators to the horns......left and right of course!     Wife - 'Turn left',    Me - 'do you mean Hi or Lo'?

Oooh, I like that. How did you wire it?

Its connected straight across the dash tell-tale lamp Roger, and just cable-tied to the dash support bracket.
