Petrol Tank Connections

Recommended Posts

During the TR5 restoration strip down, when I removed the petrol tank it is in excellent condition. This leads me to believe that it may have been replaced/renewed when the car was last rebuilt in 1993/94 for the PO.

First reaction, that's good, no need for a replacement. However, there are only 2 connections on the tank. The car was fitted with twin SUs during that rebuild 25/26 years ago, so that hasn't been a problem. The tank has one outlet to the filter and pump underneath and one on top which has been used for an overflow/pressure relief return from the filter for all this time.

My query is, for PI does the tank need 3 connections ? :-

1. Feed to filter/pump on bottom

2. PRV excess flow return on top

3. Metering Unit excess pressure return on top

Could I provide a T piece on the single top connection to deal with both returns, 2 & 3 above?

Hi Dave,

My 1970 CP has separate return connections for PRV- and MU-return.

Maybe this was done because there was a technical need (so not a cost saving)?Others may know.

But if the system from Peter works, that would be my solution too.

Regards,

Waldi

Peters' photo above shows the vertical vent pipe, filter to tank, item 37 on Moss link below, up to the single connection on top of the tank.

Peters' first photo shows the rubber tube connection, item 97 on link above, from metering unit overflow back to that same pipe into the single tank connection.

Now it's clear. My one top tank connection will suffice for PI. I can see that I will probably have to use a proprietary T piece in that pipe there but that's not a problem.

Thanks Peter.
