Hmmmm, I did a thing.....

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Well I’ve done a thing……well half done at the moment.

So I was messing around on a well know auction site and I put a silly bid on some Mx5 seats.

I’m not sure I even wanted them really, but errr I won them.

So I’ve some dark grey seats with separate headrests and they look pretty good really so I suppose I’d better fit them and see how they are.

But not wanting the spend too much on something that was a bit of a whim that I might not like, I  was wondering if anyone had any unused fitting brackets kicking around.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Mark

I'd read in other posts that there was a template but was feeling a little lazy and not having any steel to fabricate anything from i thought i'd ask on the off chance.

So if there is not alot kicking round i'll have a stab at fabricating something.

Cheers

Keith

Keith.

If your long in the leg like me I think the tr trader brackets are more favourable.

The brackets which appear in the Technicalities CD elevate the seat higher.

I'm also in the market for tr trader ones, or the dimensions so I can knock some up.

I have used the Technicalities ones on several cars and never found them to be a problem height wise and I`m 6ft 4" They are much stronger brackets. Some of the problem is when the seats have been recovered and over stuffed compared to original.

Hi Stuart

That's useful info on the height thing.

As i'm (way) under 6 foot i'll have no worry with the technicalities brackets.

I'd better look out the article for the design and measurements then get cutting and welding, lol.

Cheers Keith

That's interesting Stuart,

I'm only going on what I've been told, that said having sat in a 6 with the Technicalities brackets and leather mk1 Mx5 seats I found it very tight between seat and standard steering wheel.

Interested to know the size of steering wheel fitted to yours

Regards Mark

To test mine I used a temporary fixing, sorry,

I don't know the english words, please google photos for "Installationsschiene" and "Hammerkopfschraube Hilti MM-St".

You should get something like this from your local plumber.

Have the seats been recovered in which case more often than not they have been overstuffed also have the end drop sections with the big holes on the original runners been removed? My steering wheel is like this.

I made the adapters described in the Technicalities article. I used stock from the hardware store and the front bracket is about 1 inch tall and the rear maybe half an inch. At a towering 5' 6" this is not an issue for me or the Mrs at 5' 4"

I know, I sound much taller on the forum.

Thanks Stuart,

Seats are original cloth covered mk1's and the runners are untouched, haven't touched them or fitted yet. Think I'll give the Technicalities brackets a whirl cheers Mark

Paul Bishop supplies some heavy duty brackets for these seats or can put you in touch with the guy that makes them, I have had 3 pairs of seats off him over the last few years made my own versions of mounting but the last pair of seats I used these brackets and I found them very good. They use the existing floor holes, just screw one of the large nuts onto the front mounting studs before fitting the seat and the rears straight onto the mtg. brackets the seat sits no higher than the standard position and will have a slight slope up toward the front, which I did not attain with the home made versions which sat a bit high.
