Low Port or High Port Head

Recommended Posts

Im looking at the engine rebuild on my TR2.

My car doesn’t have the original engine but a replacement engine near to the original engine number. The car would have had a low Port Head however I do have a High Port Head which hopefully is serviceable, waiting to hear what the refurb cost if possible will be. The low Port will also need some work.

Question is how much better is the High Port head? I’m think of a piper yellow cam which I’m told should improve the torque.

If you don't spoil the head by trying to do the reworking yourself the high port head is an order of magnitude ( no I don't know how much) better.

Because you aim to fit a performance cam I guess that increases in power and torque delivery is important to you ( otherwise why are you bothering), in which case the increase the high port head gives by decreasing the tightness of the angle from horozontal to vertical are vital ( it's why tuning firms try to develop down draught heads).

If you aim to stick with standard low port heads then the head rework is even more important to release it's power and professional work is almost mandatory. You are lucky that the best headman in the UK ( in my and many others estimation) lives in the same county as yourself, and many of the specialist TR firms have been glad to beg a slot off him for his headwork ( which is then sold on) ensuring their customers benefit from the work and development he has done over the years with mine and others 4 cylinder and V8 engines. Take whatever head you choose to Peter Burgess in Alfreton and be assured you will have a good head worked to the best results possible.

No problem if you decide to work the head yourself, I've done it once when I still enjoyed thoughts that my intuitive head work would release untold reams of power...ha. Nearly scrapped my head and took 3 days of blowing my nose to get rid of the black dust and a couple of showers to get back to nearly normal levels of dirt, not a good investment of time or effort. Paying a professional and especially Peter gives the best "bang for your buck" for technical and effort employed.

Regarding your camshaft, you may wish to take a look at TRGB’s  ‘yellow’ high-torque. Supposed to be a tweaked version of the Piper, whatever it is, it works nicely in my 4.

It is..... And it's a great cam... They are manufactured by Piper to our design...  :)

Since some care was taken in using a period-correct block, you may want to consider using the low-port head just so the top end of the engine is period correct as well.  The high port will obviously use the different manifold and carbs, so the difference will be obvious under the bonnet.

Cheers

P.S.  Peter did my low port head and it is great, so he is the man.

Sorry Tom,  I didn’t realise you were the other supplier of the profile - Gary did say it was only available from a couple of places.

Fine work sir, it is doing a great job in my car!

If you want fuel economy and torque at low engine speed, then a standard low port head (with standard camshaft etc.) will provide that, but the engine will run out of puff at the top end.

My old bog-standard TR2 could trickle along at 800 rpm in overdrive top and ascend a gentle slope like that, accelerating slowly - amazing.

The low port head will give improved torque, low end performance and with 1 1/2" SUs better fuel economy.

The low port head will run out of puff above 4500rpm. In normal driving 4500 is a adequate, more than adequate.
