Pyrenees, Picos Road Trip advice

Recommended Posts

We are in early stages of planning Euro road trip in August 2020 and any advice re must do places to visit, roads hotels and best ferry routes would be greatly appreciated. We are tied to end of July and August and at the moment thoughts are ferry from Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbo followed by circa 6 to 7 day road trip of Pyrenees on Spanish side possible including the Picos followed by second week returning through France stopping at Carcasson, up to  the Dordogne for three to four nights, overnight in Loire valley, overnight stop in northern France and ferry from Santander back to Portsmouth and home. Alternative is two weeks in Pyranees and Picos plus extra couple of days for ferry from UK and back via Portsmouth and Santander or Bilbo. Any advice or recommends would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Roger looks like you had a great time. Not sure we’ll fit in everything you did but think we will give it a go.

Many thanks Jonathan

Jonathan,

We did part of your trip in June, see:

Driving over the Pyrenees to Carcasson is an excellent route, and heading north to the Dordogne is a great drive.  You could do a lot worse than stay at the vineyard Domaine de la Rogère at Minzac owned by Michel & Erica van den Beld, good friends of Kiwifrog (Alan Wynn) who recommended them to us for a similar TR6 tour in 2012,  we also stayed there with friends on a TR3A tour in 2014 for Angouleme as it's only 60 miles away - fantastic food, plenty of great wine (naturally) and a really lovely place to stay a few nights with access to Bordeaux and other historic sites - if I remember rightly, Kevo stayed there a few years ago also.

Cheers, Andrew

Big thank you to everyone who helped with suggestions and advice for Pyrenees road trip.

After  weeks of planning / research and a late night on Wednesday booking the newly released ferry crossings we now have everything booked for our summer 2020 road trip thought the Pyrenees to Andorra, south of France to Carcassonne then north to the Dordogne, Loire Valley, Normandy and home

Now  just need to do some essential maintenance on the car over the winter and we will be good to go

An improved exchange and a conclusion to a Brexit may be too much to hope for

Many thanks Jonathan

Snap Johnathan, just booked my ferry crossing and planned a very similar trip. We did a similar trip about 5 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Just seen Andrews post and we did stay at the vineyard in Minzac, absolutely recommend it.
