I used this firm http://www.ableblastclean.co.uk/index.HTML based in Tockwith to soda blast the shell of my TR6 about 10 years ago.

John, I think. Nice bloke, reasonable rates. He did a good job and sprayed the fresh metal with etch primer for me. Awful communications and he took bloody ages!

Anyhow, the body has stood up well.

The doors, bonnet and boot were dipped which, of course, takes what little paint was originally applied off the edges you can't see so there are some signs of rust appearing there.

Thanks David

I'll give them a bell and see if the communication is any better!

Thanks David & Andy,

I rang this Company twice - landline no reply, mobile a couple of days later and he (yes John) rang me back on Bank Holiday Saturday.

Doesn't recommend soda blasting anymore as it's Alkaline and can leave a deposit which itself can affect the paint adhesion. Uses fine silica sand at low pressure and just increases pressure locally to any corrosion areas to remove rust.

Dips large flat panels, e.g. bonnet, wings, etc in Methylene Dichloride solvent which, he says (?), isn't as aggressive as usual acid dips and less problematic to future paint finishes.

He'll etch prime as well.

Any comments anyone?

Well this certainly started a discussion. Having also talked to various people  at Stratford the consensus seemed to be against acid dipping the bodyshell due to issues with trapped residue, but OK on panels.

Having done a bit more research locally (Leicester) I have come across a company that will bead blast & prime the bodyshell for about half the cost of acid dipping. They have been going many years, specialise in Classics & seem to have a good reputation. The shell is booked in for next week.

thanks,

Allan

Allan,

I'd still be interested to know about the Company that you found in Leicester area?

Methylene dicloride was the chemical that made Nitromors paint stripper work. It's volatile and neurotoxic - it penetrates rubber gloves and makes your fingers go numb (temporarily!). It's great at stripping paint. Nitromors no longer has methylene dichloride in it and consequently is now pretty much useless.

So I had the body tub bead blasted and the outer panels soda blasted (except the boot lid which i did by hand), very satisfactory results. Now acid etch spraying the body before starting a few panel repairs. For anyone in the W of Scotland, these guys are highly recommended (you can see my chassis in his picture gallery)

Already done. It is indeed. I plan to do the floor pans and underside with bonda primer as well! Next is the floor replacement project, big deep breath :)

Having noted all the comments in this thread and speaking to several companies I eventually decided to go for the same solution as David above.

The West of Scotland is a bit far for me but I ended up using Soda Blasting Ltd in Wolverhampton, https://www.sodablastingltd.co.uk/ also not exactly on my doorstep but worth the trip. They have carried out work in the past for the TV show Car SOS. The website shows numerous car case studies. From the start of telephone contact I felt confident that they would do what they said they would do, including removing what I believe was the original stone chip on the inside of the wings.

They used soda on the external panels and glass bead on the majority of the shell except the scuttle and both front and rear valances and rear deck, i.e. all the panels that actually show on the finished car. There are no signs of rippling/distortion on any of the external panels.

They also applied a coat of holding primer to prevent flash rusting during transport home and the inevitable welding repairs that are necessary.

I took it to them on 11th November with a 3 week projected programme and collected it 4th December. The price quoted over the phone was exactly what I paid without any "...oh it was more difficult, we'll need to charge you more..." They were very helpful with offloading and reloading onto my trailer. I took it on a makeshift trolley made from a large wooden pallet, begged from my local Travis Perkins, with some bogie wheels on it which has made moving it around so easy.

In summary, I'm very pleased with their service, no connection just a satisfied customer. Other projects on their premises during my visits were an MGB, E Type and Mk Escort.

Now preparing a rotisserie to turn the body over for weld repairs and painting.
