Is there a preference for sealing rocker cover gasket? Given that the rocker cover is going to be on and off several times in the near future - I'm thinking of temporary seal with grease as opposed to my normal Blue Hylomar practice. ???

I use Welseal between the cover and the gasket to keep the gasket captive and a light smear of grease between the gasket and head. Tighten the nuts only just enough to take up the slack and not over compress the gasket or deform the cover.

I have an ally rocker cover that does not have any type of retainer for the cork gasket, years of never quite getting it sealed, as any degree of tightening, just caused the gasket to slide, later, I made a plywood jig. With an inset, now I fit the cork to the ally with well seal, nip down and leave overnight, grease between cork and the head and no issues.

I stick the gasket to the head with welseal, & use grease between gasket & cover, no leaks, & it had been off & on several times.

I bet you put the jam on a scone before the cream too Bob

I stick the gasket to the rocker cover (after giving the sealing surface a good clean) then lightly oil the head surface to stop the gasket sticking there. Now when I remove the rocker cover the fragile gasket/cover can be safely placed out of harms why whilst i fumble with my feeler gauges around the engine..
