Hi there. I'd be very pleased is someone could explain what is involved in replacing a TR5 near side door check strap. Thanks.

Remove the carpeted kick panel, undo the clevis pin from the front of the door that the check strap is attached to and then slide it out through the aperture in the kick panel/A post, refitting is the reverse.

As Stuart explains, a pretty straightforward job. However, unless you are lucky enough to have found a NOS item you may find, as I did, that a repro check strap will not hold the door open as positively as the original. This is particularly noticeable when parked facing up a steep hill! However it will still of course stop the door opening excessively.

Many thanks both! I note that Rimmer Bros and Moss Europe both sell them. Do you have any preference?

I buy mine from TR Shop, there was a bad batch around a few years ago that the sprung steel "Ears" were made of mild steel so didnt actually catch but current ones are fine. Do take note of which way its cranked before re-fitting.

Many thanks! An update unfortunately. On the car I am looking at it is the bracket that is attached to the door that has failed. This has two "cheeks" and the check strap fits in between them and is secured with the clevis pin. One of the cheeks is missing and the other has torn through. Any idea what is involved in replacing the bracket?

Sounds like the door got caught by a gust of wind or similar to do that damage? Only positive outcome is to remove door and strip and have it re-welded and painted. I don’t think it’s a part which is bolted in but spot welded.

It can be repaired by grinding the edge of a 3/8" flat washer to give you a flat section 1/4 of the circumference and then welding this edge on to the face in place of one cheek.and then carefully welding the other back on and then dressing carefully with a small grinder to suit.

Many thanks for your suggestions. I have had a quote from a TR specialist in Worcester to replace the bracket and the price of the car has been reduced accordingly. So I have agreed to buy the car! Please expect further posts on this blog!

Hi Denis,

ref item 21  on here https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr5-6/body-chassis/doors-fittings/doors-fittings-tr5-6.html

This is the spring for the strap.  The last one I bought form Moss was far to big and could not be fitted. I made my own from a large split pin.

They may be a better size these days.   The rivets could be a devil to fit if needed.
