Calliper pistons

Recommended Posts

Following on from my previous post, got the callipers off and on the bench, can't imagine why they were so seized

I had to use a 10 ton hydraulic spreader to break the rust weld , fortunately I have a spare pair of rebuilt callipers I'm going to fit  for the time being.

then at least I will be able to move the car now that the front wheels now turn !

I replaced these on my previous classic an SP250. Very similar calipers and new pistons and seal kit worked fine.

Hi Hamish can you tell me what you torqued the bolts that hold the calliper together please.

I used a seal kit my dad had that included the little “O” rings between the 2 halves. They are just metal to metal mating surface no other gaskets or goo.

The sp250 original workshop manual says

inner bolts 57 - 63 lb ft

outer bolts. 43 - 47 lb

It was fine for few ‘000 miles before I changed it for my 3a

hope the pics help and explain the inner and outer bolt description

Ken

you must have a local brake specialist to help.
it appears to be just a small rubber type o ring. It doesn’t need to compress much but does need to be brake fluid safe.

but failing a local source

these guys in Cheshire really know their stuff and may help with posting some.

This appears to be US based and shows the small o ring  you could ask if they’ll supply it separately

These guys I think

Most seal kits don’t have these small o rings

Does anyone know where you can get the internal o rings.? I thought they were unavailable, hence why you shouldn’t separate the caliper halves.

Ken in California

Interestingly the Moss Europe site does not list that seal as a spare part for Triumph, but do list a seal for MGB calipers.  I'd risk 50 p and strip a TR caliper to see if it was a comparable size.....

Seal  17H7679  £0.50

Did you go to stainless steel caliper pistons Hamish?

I fitted them to my car back in 2004.

Cheers

Hi Peter

yes they were stainless on the SP250 brakes I did.

apart from pads I haven't needed to touch my front 3a brakes and I can lock them even with wide sticky hillclimb tyres.
