water pump woes

Recommended Posts

ok so I changed the water pump , tried turning the engine with the cover off and all looked ok so bolted the cover on , used the feeler gauges but still seemed like some guess work was involved ,

re assembled the inlet manifold and tried it some very nasty noises came from the engine so stopped and disassembled everything again the pump looked ok ,

tried to get it out but it was stuck so put some grips on the impellor to twist it out and the impellor just came off .at this point tried turning the motor again  and everything was moving ok so reassembled refitted the cover  tried again just turning engine over seemed ok  but with everything back together but still making a horrible noise , what are the consequences of not getting the gaskets right i.e too bigger gap

Andy, It sounds like the gap maybe too small and the pump bolt head is touching the cover or the pump is not seated fully.

Might be worth a look on this

The water pumps are the same on the Stag as the TR7  ( - if you swap from 6 to 12 vane you need to fit the appropriate cover). It illustrates setting the end float too.

The method is the same on the 7 if not the exact location on the 4 cylinder engine.

The nut on top of the pump is a left hand thread.
