how to adjust crown wheel and pinion on the diff

Recommended Posts

Hi,

got an old diff as a present, outside it looks bad (layed in the rain?) but inside seems to be OK, only the ingoing flange is missing.

For recondition it I have some questions:

- how can I find out the correct washers for the pinion without the tool from the workshop manual?

- to adjust the ingoing bearing: 18 inch x pound is about 2 Nm?

- how to change the old seals of the outgoing shafts? I have to put the flanges for the halfshafts off?

- how to seal the outgoing flanges on the diff housing? Can't find a seal offered?

Thanks for your help in advance

Ciao, Marco

- how to change the old seals of the outgoing shafts? I have to put the flanges for the halfshafts off? There is a post on here somewhere showing how.

Steve-TR6 bolts them back to back and then tightens them and they pop apart

- how to seal the outgoing flanges on the diff housing? Can't find a seal offered?  No seal - use a good joint compound

Thanks for your help in advance

In the case the crown wheel and pinion is OK I need a new ingoing flange.

What I realize is it should have 6 teeth, mine has much more?

Can anyone explain me?

That input is from a saloon (2000-2.5PI, 2500TC/2500S) car or Stag.

Can you read the serial numbers stamped on the bottom of the casing?

If Stag ( serial starts L it will need different pinion bearings to the TR and saloon.

Hi Peter,

thanks for your offer to help.

There are cast numbers are on the top, right side:

305815

LEYS

09C6T

The last number looks like an individual number from the fabric workers.

I tryed to fit ond halfshafts on the outgoing flanges: this fits!

edit: downside is stamped "MG 73025"

Are they stamped? Can not find anything. Do I have to bolt the crown wheel off?

Interesting is the ratio of 38:11 as I do not have an overdrive.

But also realized my 3.7 1 is already too long for driving some time in a summer traffic jam.

The part numbers for the 3.7:1 Crown Wheel & Pinion on the TR6 are the same as those for the TR2 and TR3.

Same applies to the Diff. bearings.

Does logic imply that the dimensions for setting them up are the same ?

Regards, Colin

I intended to post this on the TR6 forum where someone is asking for Diff. dimensions
