Richardtr3a
Yesterday I opened up mt 10" rear brakes to check the linings. They are worn out so I need some new shoes. In my manual, Autopress Workshop Manual. the linings do not full cover the metal shoe. I have never found these anywhere. So I plan to buy the best quality and modify them at home. I also note that my backplate has no hold down pegs. Maybe I have a later back plate with only a small post and no springs and cupped washers. The main question is where to buy the best brake shoes. BlueTR3A-5EKT
When I was young.... We used to send out 10" Girling shoes to Canons at Clapham Common for relining - They were expensive at about £12.00 trade for each shoe, and that was in batches of 20 shoes. There are reliners about still who will no doubt copy your originals if asked. I typed in 'Brake Shoe Relining Sussex' and got these. Give 'em a ring and ask? http://www.efbreen.co.uk/Frictionworkshop.html (no prices.) https://villiersservices.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=146 (21.95 per shoe) https://brakereline.co.uk/ (no prices) Your 10" back plates have no hold down springs for the shoes, just an adjustable screwed steady post and lock nut with felt bush on the end, that rests against the back of the shoe. This is the same system Big Healey uses and also older Land Rovers. The hold down spring set up is on 9" Girling or Lockheed systems. Cheers Peter W

It seems that all the 9" linings leave about 1" of the shoe bare at one end. The 10" shoes do not have this configuration. Why should it be different. Once I know I will be able to understand my handbrake problems. Please explain. Richard and B.
