Clutch slave pushrod - odd size?

Recommended Posts

I've read about two sizes of clutch slave pushrod, 5 3/4" & 6", I decided to replace the one on my car is it's clearly been butchered but it seems to be an odd size. The image shows a new rod from Moss, it's 6", mine is much longer, something must be awry!

I didn't fit the clutch etc Roger, however, it was fitted by a Stag specialist, I assume they are familiar with how things should be. The installation looked correct to me and even if the slave cyl was on the wrong side it wouldn't make that much difference. The shortest rod in my photo is 6". the other one is much longer but the clutch worked.

I think once you pump the clutch pedal any free play is taken up, which is why people say there is no point using a longer or adjustable pushrod as it will still only move the same amount.

So you may find it all works just fine with the correct length rod?

The workshop manual for the TR2 shows the early installation with what I assume is a Lockheed slave cylinder mounted on the gearbox side of the bell housing flange.  The later Girling slave cylinder mounts on the engine side of the bell housing flange.  When I rebuilt my TR3a, I installed the slave cylinder as shown in the workshop manual and couldn't work out how to make the push rod fit, it was too long.  Eventually, just before I was about to cut it down to size I realised that the slave cylinder could be mounted on the other side of the bell housing flange - problem solved.  Changing which side of the flange that the slave cylinder is mounted results in a significant change in the length of the pushrod.

IThanks Ian, I've been looking at images online, both fitting methods seem to be used but the gearbox side seems to be most prevalent, mine was fitted on engine side so I'll have to see how the new pushrod fits if I try the slave on the gearbox side.
