Darranh
Hi, first ever post. I've got a 63 TR4 based in Christchurch, NZ. Had it for 4 yrs. My after market US headlamp dip switch has broken and I need to replace it. Power tab hasbroken off as it was very close to the clutch pedal. I can't find any photos of how they should be mounted or the oringinal type. Can someone post a photo or describe the switch and how they are mounted. Do they fit on a bracket? Mine was directly fixed to the footwell through the carpet and has side facing tabs. Cheers
RogerH
Hi Darran, welcome to the forum. In the UK Moss and many others sell the dip switch. Also on Ebay Here are items 48 and 51 https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr2-4a/electrical-system/switches-controls/relays-switches-tr4-4a.html Try not to buy cheap ones as they can be very stiff. These are common to nearly every British car during the 50's/60's https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-TR4-1961-65-FLOOR-MOUNTED-HEADLAMP-DIP-SWITCH/392212775338?fits=Car+Make%3ATriumph|Model%3ATR+4&hash=item5b51b401aa:g:Ig0AAOSwCMtaYsC8&frcectupt=true It fits directly on the front bulk head immediately below the heater. Do not have the carpet under it. The cables should point inboard away from your feet. Roger
Darranh
Thanks Roger, That makes sense re the connectors facing away and yes I have carpet beneath. The US variant I had was very stiff to press. I'll have a look at the ones you've mentioned. My TR4 was imported from the UK in 85 and is an ongoing project as I do a number of cosmetic upgrades. Done the interior, next is the engine bay over our winter down here. cheers, Darran
RogerH
I bought a new dip switch about two years ago as my original jammed during it's annual test (MOT). The new one ( about £5) was no better. In the end I rebuilt the old one and it works very well. I'm sure one of your scrap yards must have an old UK car there somewhere with a dip switch. Even if it doesn't work, grab it and sort it out, Roger.

Cheers Peter W PS You will need a couple of relays with this item as they state it is rated at 3 amps for 12 volts - That is probably not enough. PPS Stuff that! at NZ$ 64.99 it is probably cheaper to get a replacement elsewhere. Darranh
Thanks for the replies. I'm probably going to get a Lucas item from eBay but I'll try the local dealers first both new and scrap.. New Zealand has plenty of specialists selling car spares, eg there's one retailer who only sells engine mounts. my car in comparison to the other two.. cheers Darran
RogerH
Hi Darran, that looks nice. Roger
bob-menhennett
Darran That looks like a very nice solid car. Welcome to the Forum. Bob
ricky30dk
Hi Darran, I did away with my foot operated switch and wired the main beam into the column lighting switch. I moved the side-light function to a dash mounted switch as in Denmark, we are required to drive with some front light showing at all times, so mine are "always on" when the ignition is on, except when switched off with this additional switch. Cheers Richard Edited May 6, 2019 by ricky30dk
Darranh
Thanks for the responses and yes a very solid car and a delight to drive with a stage 2 engine. I’ve just ordered an original Lucas dip switch from eBay so all sorted. No doubt I’ll be asking more questions as I get my hands dirty with a rear oil seal leak too. Better close up of the interior - having restored the steering wheel
