Fast Road Engine Build - Best TR specialist in UK?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am looking for opinions and anecdotal evidence on the best TR engine specialist in the UK.

At some point in the next 24/36 months, I would like my TR4A's engine rebuilt and when I do I would like it tuned/modified to a fast road specification.

I live in Canterbury, Kent, which is a disadvantage as it seems to be a long way from any the UK's genuine TR specialists (please correct me if I am wrong). However, it is an advantage in that when I do have the engine rebuilt, I may as well have the car transported to which ever specialist I fancy most.

I have considered the following specialists...

Racetorations

TREnterprises

TRBitz

TRGB

RevingtonTR

Enginuity

I have dealt with some of them previously and have started to form some bias for who I prefer, but really wanted to first ask this community of their experiences in using any of them or any other companies I have not listed, particularly when it comes to improving the spec of their TR engine.

Money and time aren't really a consideration although I am sure this may change in the future when it comes to having it done.

I look forward to reading your thoughts and feedback.

Regards,

Paul

Well, good luck with that one. Think about the implications of setting up
an opinion poll on TR suppliers.

Yes agreed. Imagine the consequences of not doing enough due diligence before deciding on who I should trust to do the work.

You would get so many recommendations from various members for all of the above
that you would be no further forward.
And consider the legal position of the TR Register should they allow bad references
to be posted on the Forum without considerable checking with the relevant supplier
and giving the opportunity to respond.
Just not practical.

Thanks Alan, I appreciate your thoughts and I respect them. To be honest I am happy to hear only positive feedback, particularly those relating to improved engine specifications with UK TR engine specialists. From there I can contact those individuals directly to gain further advice on costs, times, component specifics etc.

Alternatively, anyone open to share their experiences, please feel free to message me privately.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Paul

I’v not heard any feedback or had personal experience related to TR Bitz ........ Regarding the others I would be happy for any of them to work on my engine, given that you have plenty of time you can talk to them all at your own pace, hear how they would propose to do the job , the timescale, costs and guarantees they will give.

After that you can make an informed choice, and compare apples with apples, or know why one may have a very different price-tag from another.

Perhaps a parallel example might help!

when commissioning new sails for Amita I was unsure who to buy from and how much to spend. They cost a six figure sum.

so i wrote a detailed specification of what i wanted from the sails, how i would use them, performance and longevity expectations etc but not price, and sent this to potential suppliers.

some quoted instantly, some had questions, some never responded!

this allowed me to enter a discussion with 2 shortlisted suppliers and to select one.

in the end i was very happy with the sails and i feel i reduced, but not elimintaed!, unforseen problems.

one other point

i really enjoyed visiting the sail loft to see progress, and on several occasions this allowed options to be discusssed and decisions taken in a more informed manner that would have been the case remotely. So perhaps nearness is an advantage?

24-36 months anything can happen in that time maybe ask the question nearer the time ,maybe 12 mths in advance so you can book it in etc, there's a lot of very good engine builders which charge a lot less than the TR speacilists.

Good luck with it though.

Hi Paul, I'm with Steve, you need to spend much time deciding what spec you want,

Engine capacity, Carburation, head work, balancing, Exhaust system, Air filters, Crankcase breathing. Etc

Also once dismantled there may be remedial work required, ie head stud helicoils, cracks in head or block etc which you need to have a contingency cost for.

Only by doing this can you compare eggs with eggs and consider the cost.

Best of luck

Chris

IMHO...simple design engine..no need to spend mega money at a "TR specialist".

Find a very good local mechanic and engine machine shop and go from there.

Carlow Engineering of Benfleet Essex (20mins from Dartford Crossing on a good Day) did my engine and have done many others mainly for triumphs.

Perhaps Crown Classics in Twickenham.

https://www.crownclassiccars.co.uk

The business is run by two brothers that worked for many years in the Cox and Buckles (latterly Moss) engine building and garage workshop in Richmond, so they know their way around a TR engine.  They have recently done a full TR engine for another forum member who to my knowledge is very pleased with the outcome.
