Hi Marcus,

Don't know much about Hondas but BMWs with variable valve timing can make a rattling/clacking sound from the top end when the VVT goes wrong.

On the BMWs, it's usually the solenoid that controls the VVT that's the problem.

Hi Marcus,

I presume it is a fairly modern Honda which will have OBD11 analysis port. If nothing else you should get fault codes that will allow research on line as to where to start.
Dependent on the type the code reader will tell you if it is one of three to four areas, Engine management, gearbox, SRS system, Brakes steering etc.

You don't say if petrol or diesel but if an "old lady's" car it probably needs a good blatting to clean out particulate filters because they often relay on motorway high speed heat generation to self clean I'm thinking particulate filters, blocked intercooler which all can effect running and produce the most bizarre noises from unrelated areas.

You are welcome to borrow my CReader which has most of the main dealer software and plugs in to search for the relevant cars software interface. Worked so far for me on Volvo, Suzuki, Ford Focus and Fiesta and Mini Cooper S. Drop me a line and you can pick it up when you pass the door.

I will run you through using it on one of my cars to give you a head start.

Or go to your local garage and ask the cost of a diagnostic check which will tell you the same but perhaps more detail usually cost around £70.

Common faults include electrical issues with electronic fuel injection rail and perhaps specific modules with the reader you can identify specific cylinder fault or injector. A search online using a heading "Honda faults" brings up instances of the same issue ( code) from others with same problem and access to worldwide problem solving. Just takes a bit of  time to identify the problem.

Sorry to say it but many main dealer workshops just change modules as they can't be fixed. Be aware that some on board ECU can cost more than a car is worth but can and are easily repaired by ECU specialists. They are often located beneath seats and are prone to children spilling drinks in them or water sitting in a foot well.

Best regards

Rod

Funny no-one on this forum thought about that. So obvious.

Impact gun  set to 3 or 4 uggerduggers is no way enough. Needs 10 to 12 at least.

I did my tyre winter to summer air swap at the weekend - what a coincidence !!!
