Rktr4a
Hi all, currently restoring late 4a and unsure as to where exact position of brackets to strenghthen lower wishbone . The car seems to have a plate already in position on the rear bracket on both sides , and all the photos I’ve seen don’t look the same as my car. can anyone post photos of before and after fitting of strengthening brackets. cheers Rob

Rktr4a
The trailing arm front brackets seem to be part of the steering rack fixing bracket . this is where the confusion is ,the rear trailing arm brackets have a strengther at the rear of them and look like a factory installation. see pics. whats the thoughts
rcreweread
Rob I think we are getting confused here - trailing arm brackets are at the rear - you seem to be referring the the front lower suspension mountings. I've attached some photos of strengthening brackets on one of my chassis ( I haven't finished dressing them so apologies for the welding looking a bit lumpy at the moment) - these photos are of the nearside - hopefully they will help. I used a standard strengthening kit and modified it a little with some additional fillets - just make sure the very front strengthener ( one on the left in second photo) doesn't stick down too far otherwise you wont be able to fit the bumper support bracket! Rktr4a
Sorry Rich, my mistake, now it makes more sense . Thank you. cheers Rob
stuart
Also dont forget to upgrade to the two bolt inner lower wishbone brackets for safety sake. Stuart
RogerH
Hi Rob, Stuart's comment is most important. After many years of bumps and scuffs the single stud that holds the bracket for the lower wishbone arms becomes corroded and cracked. item #100 https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr2-4a/steering-suspension/front-suspension/front-suspension-tr4a.html Eventually it will let go as mine did in 2014 during a very rapid stop at a traffic light. Easy and cheap to change - DO IT. Roger Edited March 18, 2019 by RogerH
Tr4aJim
Stuart/Roger, After reading this topic, I went right out and checked my TR4a. I am distressed to say that my car still has the single bolt brackets! In addition, the lower suspension attachment points on the chassis do not have a strengthening kits applied. Ive inspected both areas as best I can, and do not see any evidence of cracks, or movement. However, I realize that weak points can develope and fail. So, regarding the single bolt brackets, does the front suspension (including the spring) have to be disassembled to replace them? Can the chassis strengthening kits be welded on with the chassis/body attached? I do not have a welder, so I would have to get this done. Is it work that requires a Triumph specialist, or could any competent welder do the work? thanks Jim
stuart
To do the double bolt lower inners and the strengtheners is best done at the same time, it can be done with the body on and strip the suspension just leaving the upper arms in place thus giving the welder room too work. Tr4aJim
Would this Tr6 procedure also be the correct for accessing/replacing the lower wishbone brackets on a Tr4a? https://youtu.be/7js8y9rMXzk Jim Edited March 18, 2019 by Tr4aJim

Make sure you have the right type of spring compressor, similar to the one in that clip. Stuart.
