Sealed beam headlights

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Just about to change my headlights on the TR6. I have purchased two of these :-

Are these ok to fit without any modifications to the wiring etc ?

Thanks for your help.

Mark.

An headlamp relay kit is advised to protect the switch from the higher main beam current draw and ensure you have 12 volts at the headlamp, which will enhance light output

Are you after better lighting?  Read Lebro’s thread on LED headlamp bulbs in Cibie headlamp units.

Cheers

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply. Not after better lighting at this stage as I have too much else to do to the car at the moment. The new sealed beams are 75/50w compared with the factory fitted 60/50w.

Cheers.

Hi Mark,

           enjoy your sealed beams.

If you get to a point that you consider you need more light then consider separate bulbs and reflectors. This will give you an greater selection to satisfy your needs.

Osram Nightbreaker and Philips Extreme, both gas filled (Xenon/Halogen)  are excellent filament bulbs (as are Halfords)

These give a very good colour and are not blinding white.

Being 60/55W they will not strain your system.

Hi Roger,

Thanks, I will at some stage, upgrade.

The new sealed beams are 75/50w, will these be ok without any modification ? The ones I took out were 50/50w.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Mark.

Mark,

fitting a relay as proposed by Peter above is recommended, it is the cheapest way to more light and improved reliability.

Plenty of posts on here on how to do that.

Hi all,

So my car is 51 years old, never had headlamp relays.

I have had 3 pairs of headlamps during this time.

last year fitted halogen H4 lamps 60/55, with new headlamp harnesses.

I am not an electrical wizard, so prefer not to mess with the harness.

why do I need relays?

1) the age of the wiring.

2) the age of the switch.

3) Because I have changed my headlamps.

Hi Peter

Adding relays with an independent fused supply reduces the current flow through the switches and with a suitably rated relay allows maximum power to reach the lights. Old switches tend to have a resistance to current flow which causes heat and reduces available power, so the lights do not perform as well as they could.

And make sure the earthing is good, relays ensure solid positive feed but without good earth the current and therefore brightness will still be hampered

Thanks for all the replies.

Roger H answered my initial question (thanks Roger).

Will fit them tomorrow without any mods.

Will take on board all the advise regarding relays etc for future upgrade.

Thanks all.

I used those rated sealed beam units and found them not very reliable as they always blew after 4 to 5 months of use. My advice would be to use Cibie H4 conversion to halogen bulbs or led. I did the Cibie option and never regretted it. The optics of the Cibie's is far better than the Lucas H4 lens, they give a far better spread of light on main or dip.
