Anybody had a full respray done recently...Advice please

Recommended Posts

I've decided that as the plan is never to sell my TR6 to have a complete bare metal respray. The body is good with very little rust but the paintwork is not. It currently consists of an assortment of paint shades in acrylic and cellulose paints..

I'm about to start approaching some body shops and am looking for advise on the pitfalls on getting this done

Can anyone recommend anyone in the west midlands area that they have used and are happy with the result?

If you had your car resprayed and were going about it now what would you do differently if anything?

When the paint comes off be ready for what you might find after 50 years of economy repairs, there is no going back until the bank is empty.

Hardest thing to do now is find a body shop interested in spraying classics. Repairs to modern cars is just so much easy money. Such a shortage brings higher prices.

I would start at E.J Wards, the Stag garage who do other models and have a great reputation at sensible prices.

I had mine done recently by ARG Refinishing. At the time they were based in Stoke on Trent, but have since moved to Leek, Staffordshire. Ant was brilliant, and sent me progress photos and a photo of the paint tin - which scared the life out of me because I was going from the Signal Red the car was in when I received it to its original Pimento, which is far more orange than I imagined.

Let me know if you want any photos adding, or if you want Ant's number

Make sure they fully understand what you want done- take some photos along of finished jobs you like. Make sure they understand if you want the engine bay and cockpit done.

In Australia  finding a shop that's still interested in this type of work is difficult, 10 years ago I used a hot rod specialist.

I would try to find out the body shops reputation, the quality of the work and from previous customers, and see the jobs they are doing at the moment, so you can see for yourself the level of attention to detail they can do.

Decide how much you want/are able to do. Naturally the more you do yourself, the less you pay the painter.

I have stripped cars to bare metal before sending for body repairs and painting. The paint stripping is time consuming but doesn't need the skill (or hourly rate) of a professional. I would strongly recommend getting the body shop to do the final prep before paint, otherwise any problems with the final paint finish will lead to difficult discussions about who is responsible.

I've been very happy with the job done on my GT6 at Complete Car Care in Theddingworth. It's East Midlands,  between Lutterworth and Market Harborough.
