The timing strut is a matt black, usually metal, plate/fin that's attached to the front of the car.  Its use is to start and stop the timing equipment operated by organising club.

It can be attached to the car (bumper, number plate, chassis, body) with elastic bands, tie wraps or more normally bolted.

It has a minimum / maximum size and positioning defined in section 10.9 of the MSA Year Book.

Min vertical height 254mm, bottom of which shall be not less than 180mm and not more than 200mm from the ground.  Matt black on both sides which shall not be less than 254mm by 51mm.

Does that make sense?
