After driving into a fence post my steering wheel moved through 90 degrees  ( edit should read 180 degrees)   but still worked well. Now that we have the wheels off the damage can be assessed.  The black tube housing for the column has moved 1/2" away from the black steering box housing. Therefore the peg in the rocker shaft is now operating higher up the scroll.

Option 1 

Take off the steering wheel and press the tube back into place, and carry on.

Option 2

Remove and dismantle the whole column/housing and renew everything. 

For one hit on the track rod ends to cause so much movement there may have been wear inside . Any way it has never been overhauled since new and if the scroll has moved it may not go push  back in correctly with bearings etc which need to be lined up. Is there a specialist out there who can be recommended to overhaul my unit.

For such a safety critical area just pushing the tube back in is not acceptable. You must remove the box & column, & either replace, or ascertain exactly how the two parts are meant to be connected, & repair / get someone else to repair.

Thanks for the contacts . That is very helpful. I need some more technical information. 

  • How did a minor blow at 15 mph cause the peg to move the scroll.
  • How is the tube originally fixed
  • Would it be best to contact a known TR specialist or a steering company.

My local classic car garage, mini specialist, told me to move the steering wheel to a new position. Steering and brakes can not be subject to economy or luck. I have very little movement to the right and trying to turn around is very difficult.

The fence post was an easy fix within 24 hours. I will take out the steering unit when it is warm enough to take the front panel off. Not this week.!!

Hi Richard,

I have found in the past that the outer column tube is soft soldered into the steering box which perhaps explains why this has happened.

Early last year I had a head on collision with the Armco (TR2) causing extensive frontal damage including the same problem as yours with the steering.

I found that the drop arm from the underside of the steering box was out of alignment and after removing  the steering column and dismantling the box I found that the rocker shaft which carries the peg had been twisted within its length by at least 10 deg. which reinforces Bobs comments regarding checking everything out.

Fortunately I have a very good spare column.

That is very useful because it was diagnosed today as a steering box problem by a specialist garage in Hastings. I had no idea that the rocker shaft could be damaged at such a low speed.  I have bought a replacement steering box second hand,  and now I am looking for the drop arm lever which is NCA at Moss.  Has anyone on the forum got a spare in the garage or at Stoneleigh on Sunday. Mine may be all right but if it all has to be stripped out I would feel more confident in replacing any thing which may be damaged or strained.
