If you are careful you can do it with a standard trolly jack.

I have two trolly jacks if that helps :D. Where would you place the jack, is it front heavy for example?

The CofG is apprx 1" forward of the joint for the back plate.

If using a croc jack then you really need a cradle (as shown bt Micky on the stag)  to hold the diff on the jack as you need to waggle the diff to get it out/in.

That is why I use ropes around the three sticky out bits.

Went to move my 6 and there was no noise/resistance this time, I'm thinking it could have been spline lock as suggested, and maybe jacking up the back had released it? Took it round the block and all was normal. Had planned to get under and take a proper look, but circumstances didn't allow, hopefully tomorrow.

Thanks for the guidance guys - having pressed on.

I dropped the diff by partially undoing the bolts and lowering the car to rest it onto a couple of bags of sand. I then undid the bolts lifted the car and dragged it out.

So though I couldn't feel any problem with the rear prop shaft  U/J there are signs that the outer bearing casing in one side had been rotating in the yoke as there is a clear area that has been worn bright by the circlip.

There is also a fractured front diff mounting - clean across so from what I have picked up on other threads a strengthening kit and a handy welder are required.

So all horrible noises explained.
